No sounds like an awful idea, test nerves seem to play a big part in the actual test, if you’re not confident enough to get over it and drive safely under pressure you shouldn’t be on the road.

 

I guess this has some parallels with GCSE’s and A levels, you risk lowering standards and watering down the qualification, even if in practice this isn’t the case it’ll be damn hard to prove otherwise against perception.

Sounds like the common theme we are seeing in lockdown, someone is inconvenienced so must be compensated by being given what they want without following due process.

They do this in some states of Australia. The amount of P players (newly qualified drivers) having accidents and killing themselves is astonishing.

It isn't than much better here. The single biggest cause of death in 16-20ish girls? Their boyfriend's driving.

 

I don't know about the instructors doing tests; no one is even getting instruction atm.

Yes - do not think that is a good idea at all

 

sympathy for those that want to do the test and can't but - in most cases it is a want not a need

 

 

on a slight side topic - I have actually written to my MP about petitions because you can start a petition about anything - within reason

and people can 'sign' it - but if you seriously disagree with it there is no way to say so

 

the letter was in response to a petition about ebike speed limits (yeah - I know shock -me ebikes) which loads of people shout about but the silent majority thinks are OK

same applies here - loads of 17/18 year old would sign up to this - but loads more people probably think it is a dumb idea

My daughter was due to take her test first week of April 2020, that didn’t happen, then rescheduled for mid October 2020, that was also cancelled and now she’s been told may 2021 at the earliest. She’s now away at uni, hasn’t driven anything for 5 months. Would I like her to just be given her licence? As her dad, would make life easier, but in reality she would be a danger behind the wheel as would the tens of thousands of others in the same boat. It’s unfortunate but this isn’t the answer....

As someone currently learning to drive (well, finished learning really!) but unable to take a test owing to COVID, I too would be very glad to be handed a licence. However, as many people have said, that would be a catastrophically stupid idea.

 

Not that it matters, as there is more chance of Trump joining a monastery than there is of the DVSA doing this...

On a different theme - and this is not me tarnishing the reputation of all driving instructors, but they'll be some out there that wouldn't pass anybody because they know there's guaranteed income when things get back to normal as they'll continue to have to take lessons.

 

However, with regards to lessons taking place when things do get back to normal because people haven't been able to - they'll be such a backlog it may even be difficult for anybody who has turned 17 over the last few months to get booked on with an instructor.

imagine the market for letters from authorised driving instructors saying little freddy has done SOOO well in his lessons

 

 

and I would imagine there are quite a few that are quite desperate for money after all this

Knowing how my driving instructor used to behave with some of his clients, I'm sure that the pretty ones who flirted with him would be passed without a second thought as to their actual ability.

 

What a disasterous idea this would be.
