Hardly surprising. The link doesn't do anything:

Curly braces used in place of < and > because the forum is a bit too helpful in placing the Edugeek URL in it :p

Seems a bit dodgy actually. There would be a good list of legal issues that they will have, such as copyright infringement/trademark infringement (microsoft own the look of windows xp and windows vista, and also XP is a trademark I believe). Also, they don't mention access to source code/GNU related issues.

 

Finally, 'runs windows applications' is a grand claim to make. I'd assume they are referring to using wine but then that isn't 100% (not even close).

 

I'd steer clear!

Just found a download link through another Google search.

 

Apparently the 2005 release if free where as the 2008 release is $40 but comes with a trial. Wonder if I can install to a VM (M$ Virtual PC) - doubt it. Oh well, there's a machine sat spare here anyways.

It says it runs MOST Windows apps - so I'd guess it's WINE.

 

I'd steer clear!

 

I'm still going to try it - I'll feedback on how I get on.

Is it not a case of what people are used to. Let's take my Dad for instance. He can use a computer no problem, but that took years for him to get used to. Now if I say here's a Linux desktop that might take another year for him to get to grips with that.

 

Putting an XP interface on will minimise the disruption of change. I know for a fact that lots of teachers are much worse than my Dad when it comes to stuff like this.

 

(Sorry for using my Dad for this example haha)

 

I'm not backing this stuff yet - just wanting to trial it.

I have kubuntu configured to be as much like XP as is possible I think. The task bar, quick launch bar, and notification area are identical. And Chrome makes the web the same anywhere. Dolphin for file management, Open Office, VLC... it's pretty much like for like.

 

I need to fall back on Firefox for the odd M$ dogged website every once in a while is all. And there's no windows key :p
