Microsoft Teams - Meeting Chat

Our Year 11 are on remote learning for 2 weeks and I am getting reports that some students cant use the meeting chat function but a few of them say it works in other lessons. Meeting and Messaging policies are set correctly.

 

My first reply is that they are not signing into Teams with their school email address and entering as a guest.

 

Another student I realised was using a Samsung tab which for some reason never had the meeting chat function. Is there a different experience for some devices?

 

Is it because some teachers have enabled Team moderation although I would still expect meeting chat to work.

 

Stumped! Any suggestions?

Hi,

 

If you have Guest access enabled, guests will pick up what you have defined in 'Meeting, Meetings Settings' in the Teams Admin Centre. They will also pick up the Global Meeting & Messaging policies.

 

We've got this dilemma at the moment. If you have guest access enabled, staff can meet with guests which have quiet unrestrictive polices as you want to see guests on webcam and chat with them but students are often signing in as guests and most of the time, it's not their fault. It will be because they are using a laptop signed in to a parents Microsoft account or Chrome signed in to someone's Gmail.

 

Settings can be altered to help control but it seems to rely on Teachers doing X, Y & Z and with a global policy, staff policy and student policy to be configured, there is going to be margin for error.

 

It's a real headache!

We are having this issues with a few classes where this is happening.

No still experiencing this, the same students can access meeting chat in other lessons and other students have access to meeting chat in all lessons. I sent out a survey to try and find a pattern of devices, app and browsers etc. but this as not really helped. I found a few mentions of this being a Teams bug and leaving and re entering the meeting would resolve it but not really followed this up.

Our pattern suggests that only those using Windows devices can access chat, even when disabled. Android and iOS respect the setting.

 

To prevent students joining as guests, get your teachers to 'meet now' rather than schedule the meeting. Then there's no way of joining as a guest as students are never aware of the join link. They can only join by being signed in to Teams and opening the correct Team and clicking join when the meeting is available. This is how we've done it since June and never have we had students coming in as guests.

I accessed one of the teacher sessions that this was happening to, used their Teams to invite myself to the lesson and didn't get a chat option. I tried leaving and re-joining but that didn't change anything.

When we next get the issue reported I will see if I can get the teacher to abandon the meeting and set up again with a "Meet now" and see what happens.
