simpsonj Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Has anyone else having issues with Lenovo T450s and graphics drivers? As soon as I change the driver from the Microsoft Display Adapter to the Intel® HD 5500, it gives me a black screen with a cursor. Windows is merrily running, but I can't see anything. Boot into safe mode and everything is fine again. As soon as I'm out of safe mode, with the Intel driver, I can see the initial Windows screen, but as soon as I click to enter a username and password, the screen 'freezes' and if I manage to login, the screen just goes black with a cursor. I have tried: 3 different Intel Drivers Updating Windows via Windows Updates Changing the resolution Connecting an external display Two different versions of Windows 10 (1905 and 2004) Changing the Screen driver Running Lenovo System Center and updating all drivers found there I'm out of ideas The other T450s bought at the same time, no issues whatsoever... Anyone got a suggestion?
Achandler Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 You sure you don't just have a laptop with a knackered graphics chip, that as soon as the system tries to use it properly it fails. Normal graphics card can do it where they work fine, then soon as you load anything 3d it failed (i.e opened a game). 1
3s-gtech Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Just on one machine? That'd usually suggest a hardware fault with the GPU portion of the CPU - the proper drivers are requesting it do something that it can't. The MS basic display driver is not making the same calls and demands on the hardware. Is the CPU soldered? 1
simpsonj Posted November 18, 2020 Author Posted November 18, 2020 I was worried that a hardware fault would be the general consensus, but it does seem the most probably. I was just hoping it was a Windows issue. Time to setup a return under warranty! James
Achandler Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Lenovo Warranty for me at least has always been pretty good. Usually returned within a week of being collected, including during COVID. 1
