Hello, hope you’re all well.

We want to disable chat for Students in class Teams meetings. There is a ‘disable chat‘ setting in the meeting policies, but does that setting get applied to the students policy, or the staff (who arrange the meeting) policy?

Propagation is so slow it makes testing very tricky.

Thanks

Thanks just noticed you can go into the teams Individually, settings, choose ‘only owners can post messages’.

Is there not a way to globally set this or powershell on all Class Teams?

A guide for staff to set this never works.

Hello - We have now tested the 'Only owners can post messages' setting on a channel but yet students (who are 'members') can still post to Meeting Chat..

Are there any other ideas for ways to prevent students posting in Meeting Chat?

Thanks

Turns out there is a way (e-mailed you directly this solution Pete, but putting it here for everyone else)

As long as the meeting is targeted in a Team, if you go to the Manage Users section of the Team you can Mute the students (can be done during a meeting as well)

Students who are muted will then get a message saying conversations is disabled, so you can target it to specific students or the whole class.

if you want their feedback during the meeting either via text our audio, you have to go into the same section to unmute them.

Muting via the normal meeting interface just disables their microphone and does not prevent chat.

Just got a notification from Microsoft this morning that this will be added to the meeting options by end of November. Can't find the email now but it was in the changes list emailed out this week

You have to go to the specific Team. Click the three dots next to the Team name. Choose Manage Team. In the Members tab, expand the Members and Guests. Check the Mute Students. This mutes chat, not audio.

it is a shame they have not included an 'only the organiser can chat' settings. If you want to stop students chatting the only option is:

"Off: will make meeting chat read only and no one can send messages in chat including the organizer"

so close.....
