themanfromict Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 (edited) I'm being pushed to ditch our 6 month old file server in favour of cloud storage by SLT (also to look at clearing it of ALL their files ever summer, but that's another story). We currently have Google Suite, which I know offers basically unlimited storage per user, and the same for shared drives. How much space do you get with O365 (A3)? Hopefully we can use the governments digital education platform to set some of this up? Edited October 9, 2020 by themanfromict
mavhc Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 Are they planning to sell it? OneDrive for Business limits OneDrive for Business Plan 1 provides 1 TB of storage space per user. The following qualifying plans provide unlimited OneDrive storage per user for subscriptions with at least five users. Microsoft will provide an initial 5 TB of storage space per user. Customers who want additional OneDrive storage can request it as needed by contacting Microsoft Support. Subscriptions with less than five users receive 1 TB of storage per user. Office 365 A1 Office 365 A3 Office 365 A5 Unlimited personal cloud storage for qualifying plans for subscriptions of five or more users, otherwise 1 TB/user. Microsoft will initially provide 1 TB/user of OneDrive for Business storage which admins can increase to 5 TB/user. Request additional storage by contacting Microsoft support. Storage up to 25 TB/user is provisioned in OneDrive for Business. Beyond 25 TB, storage is provisioned as 25 TB SharePoint team sites to individual users. It's basically unlimited, same as Google
CHiLL Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 Personally, I don't think a cloud-only solution for a constantly used file server is there yet. Office 365 has a hard limit of 1TB per account, so you'd probably need to purchase a subscription to their online storage, which is not included in your current plan. Have SLT considered the impact of Internet or provider downtime?
themanfromict Posted October 9, 2020 Author Posted October 9, 2020 They still have ancient laptop, but prefer to blame the server... While not wanting to pay Microsoft and hating Google...
fiza Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 We currently have Google Suite, Hopefully we can use the governments digital education platform to set some of this up? Neil If you already have G Suite then I don't think you can use the DfE scheme to get help to set up as it is for schools who are not yet set up to assign work and communicate with pupils.
supportman Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 I don't see any reason why not, we are moving to Onedrive for personal files and Sharepoint online for a shared drive. Seems to work well so far. I wish our SLT were as forward thinking as yours to be honest

We had G suite already setup but claimed the DFE funding to have office 365 setup, so should be fine. 1
ITGURU Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 Lets hope onedrive doesnt have an outage like email did!
thimon Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 Both OneDrive / SharePoint and G Suite will at some point experience outages, no way around that. I would advise to keep a local file share for multimedia files, no way cloud storage can replicate the speed of an onsite file server.

Or is it just a fresh os install ,seems a bit weird that slt want to go that route if the hardware is brand new if they are aware of it
