How to insert French/German chacters using key codes on a elitebook

Hi,

a few of our teachers are using HP elitebooks (840) but using the traditional characters codes using ALT + number pad for accented a's um lauts etc. doesnt' work as there is no separate number pad unless we plug in a additional keyboard.

 

Is there any way to get this working on laptops with out the number pad on the RH side?

Add the language and use the on-screen keyboard?
