Art Projectors - What do you use?

Our Art Dept have for years used OHPs for students to project Art onto a wall for sketching purposes. These OHPs are getting expensive to maintain so they are looking to move up to portable projectors. Does anyone have any recommendations?

How about a HUE visualiser, attached to a laptop, projected via a small LED portable projector

Don't.

 

OHPs have practically nothing in them to go wrong other than a lamp. They are also obviously hot.

 

This was caused by art students and a data projector.

Well that was slightly different according to the BBC

 

A student exhibition space made from chipboard and wooden studs had been constructed there.It consisted of high expansion foam panels fastened to three of the walls, with one wall left blank to receive projected images from a projector mounted on the opposite wall.

At the time of the incident gaps between the foam panels were being filled-in by applying foam directly from a canister of expanding foam. The report said: "Fire was caused when flammable gases (isobutane, propane and dimethyl ether) used as a propellant within a canister of expanding foam was discharged in close proximity to the projector.

Well that was slightly different according to the BBC

At the time, the company who hired the projector to them thought that it was caused by the projector being covered due to "the excessive noise from the cooling fan". TBF, I've not heard any more about it since.

i wouldnt normally recommend these for education install but we have a range of colour accurate home cinema products in HD or UHD that would give truer colours than you would get from a typical education install. i can PM details if interested. costs have come down a lot over recent years.

We are not looking to spend loads on this. Depends what the price is on these.

If the old school technology still works, use that. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Unless the content to be projected is already digital, I also would stick the old OHP method. If not you're going to be looking at a document camera to get the work into the digital domain as well as a projector. (It should be noted if you get a document camera with an HDMI output you could skip the PC part of the process if you didn't need to save the work!)

 

Projector recommendations? How big a wall are you looking to project onto, and from what distance? You may find an ultra short throw projector may work better as it can cover more surface area, and the image is less likely to be affected by shadows .

The downside of Ultra-short throw projectors is that if your surface isn't perfectly flat and square to the projector, distortion will be significant.
