sigma Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 So, I've grabbed a few different model laptops, inspected their wireless card properties and they are all set to "Medium". I've taken another one of these Lenovo's, these seem to be set to "Low" by default and changed that to "Medium". I'll see how that goes.
sigma Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 From Dell referencing Intel WiFi cards: https://www.dell.com/support/article/en-uk/sln285293/change-the-intel-advanced-wi-fi-adapter-settings-to-improve-slow-performance-and-intermittent-connections?lang=en#Windows_10 In the Property: box, touch or click Roaming Aggressiveness and select 1. Lowest from the drop-down menu under Value:. Note: This setting is suggested for home wireless networks. When you are on a business network and move from place to place, the setting should be set to 3. Medium. As yet I can't find a specific reference to Realtek Advanced settings. 1
Squelch Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 I had a similar experience when moving between access points on some but not all of the laptops in one class, I think about 40% of them connected to another AP without any intervention from me. Others from the same class would not connect to a different AP and needed to be reinstalled. Our laptops sometimes move around the school so the medium setting is right for us.
Squelch Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 (edited) It's been a week and I have only had a report of one laptop not connecting to wi-fi. It was moved away from it's usual location so would have been trying to connect to a new AP. I didn't see it for myself so it's not confirmed that it's the same old problem and I can't get the laptop to repeat it either. I've noticed a newer x64 driver now, version 226 from late August (it's on the same driverhub link that I posted before). https://www.drvhub.net/devices/network/realtek/rtl8822ce-802-11ac-pcie-adapter Edited October 8, 2020 by Squelch 2
jcoehoorn Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 (edited) Also having this problem on approx 20 Ideapad 3 machines (15ILL05). The HP 8.214-226 drivers have not helped, nor has setting the roaming sensitivity to Middle. The resolve the immediate connection, but as faculty move around campus they still have issues. Removing the device and re-adding in device manager does fix it (for a while). We can also work around this by first manually connecting to *any other SSID*, even one with no or poor internet access, and then connecting back to the desired SSID. This might be a simpler work-around for many than what I've seen so far in this thread, especially if you have the ability to setup a dummy SSID for this specific purpose. Squelch Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 Did you stop the computer from turning off the wi-fi adapter to save power?
jcoehoorn Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 I have not done that yet. I'll have to wait to try it until the next one to comes in with a bad connection. That might be a while; instructors are learning how to do the work-around on their own, and will often just connect to the public network and then connect back (or even leave it on public until it breaks there, if that's all they're using). 1
Squelch Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 I was checking one of my laptops today, it was in sleep mode when I opened the cover. The wi-fi showed Connected, No Internet for around 10 seconds and then corrected itself. It would be helpful to know if your laptops are coming out of sleep mode when the connection fails. Thanks for the information.

Steve21 Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 We've got a bunch of these that do the exact same, honestly haven't had enough time to deal with them yet, but for us it can be from start up it instantly brings back a 169 and fails to connect until disable/reinstall etc Steve
DrBeaker Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 If it's any help years ago we had similar issues with some laptops. After many months of hassle and research, I found others had problems with the exact driver version we had. Got a newer one direct from Intel and it solved the problem. Sometimes it's the daft stuff.
3s-gtech Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 I watched on one as I installed the new driver - it went from ‘no internet access’ to connected as soon as I installed it. It may not be totally sorted (very hard to check), but it’s definitely better.
Steve21 Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 Which driver version are you using? We only got these over Summer unless they released another one recently Would be interesting to test it Steve
Steve21 Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 Version 214 from HP. Bah I didn't see your other post where you said it was a different laptop! Guess no harm in me trying those too! Steve
3s-gtech Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 Different laptop, exact same card and symptoms though.
Steve21 Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 Different laptop, exact same card and symptoms though. Aye aye was joking Still worth a try with the HP drivers on Lenovo I meant Steve
3s-gtech Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 Yeah - as it’s a Realtek card it makes no difference. The HP installer just extracts a driver pack - it doesn’t do a mobo check so it’s good as a universal package. I recently did this with a Dell Realtek audio driver pack for some older Lenovo laptops that fixed a microphone issue!
Squelch Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 We're up to version 226 with the same problems. https://www.drvhub.net/devices/network/realtek/rtl8822ce-802-11ac-pcie-adapter
sigma Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 We're up to version 226 with the same problems. https://www.drvhub.net/devices/network/realtek/rtl8822ce-802-11ac-pcie-adapter Just occasionally, you need to go back to older drivers (if you can find them) as once an error is baked in it can be carried forward to later versions.
jcoehoorn Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 I'm suspicious some of these driver updates are actually helping. I know it's clearly a driver issue, but as one of the work-arounds is to remove and re-add the card via device manager, any driver update also effectively executes the work-around. In other words, we can't really know for some time whether a driver update is a long-term fix.
sigma Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 I've emailed Realtek since there's nothing whatsoever from Lenovo. I suppose I'm not really expecting a reply from them though either, sadly. 1
3s-gtech Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 As they’re a parts supplier and don’t have a retail side, I suspect you’ll get very little from them - they’ll just refer you to the OEM.
Jawloms Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 I have just set up a second SSID with the same settings as my first one (apart from the actual name of the network of course!!) and if I have a device which won't pick up an IP, I can tell it to connect to the other network and it gets an IP immediately. I don't know exactly what this tells us or whether it's useful, but it's more information. 2

Quite, but all indications are it's the Realtek signed driver which is going out to all the OEMs. Don't know why the OEM's aren't giving them pain.... 1
