vnc replacement

we started trialling this software called AB Tutor Control

 

have to say it seems pretty damn amazing and it dont cost and arm and a leg.

 

it does all the usual vnc type things but you can tile all the monitored workstations across the screen. You can create groups so teachers only monitor their classrooms and dont accidently affect other machines. there's the option to create a classroom plan. you can lock machines with a custom message/graphic. Teachers are well impressed with the ability to remotly use workstations to illustrate things. the same as vnc but the controls are much more user friendly. does other things too.

The teachers are well impressed lol.

 

and it aint a nightmare to install like vnc is, especially on a network.

I have been using this for some time, although I would like to use it on a larger scale. I've not used the latest version yet as I've been too busy to install it.

IIRC, Ranger has a similar feature, as does RM Tutor. But we believe there are "issues" with the latter.

 

Hmmm, not bad - £150 for each control application, unlimited workstations

I have been using VNCon for a few months now and I like it;

I have used it for about 18 months now. The librarian uses it more than me though as well although she only has the VNC capabilities. The only trouble with it is name changing IP adresses after the initial scan sometimes which makes it wrongly detect if the machines are active or not.

we tried to use vncon. its was fine when just us techies used it, but it teachers wanted it for monitoring kids in their classrooms. It really doesnt like multiple users using it at the same time. well here anyway. became totally unreliable.

Net Support School does this as well, used the Net Support manager for just over 1 year now, and just trialing the school units in the classroom,

We've got imperta inour school easy to use very similar to net support school, you can create classroom plans etc... not cheap though when we got it. i'd recommend it though, teachers also seem to like it!

These are standard features in programs like NetOp, NetSupport, Ranger etc. What is more important is how stable is it in use and how teachers find using the interface?

IMHO NetSupport is the best product on the market and has the most sensible licesing structure. Every client needs a license but any client can be a 'control' client at no extra cost. Licenses are approx. £25 IIRC (for NetSupport Manager - dependant upon number, etc.)
