Wall Amp for speakers

We have wall-mounted speakers that connect to a wall-mounted amp box. This setup has been in place for donkey's years and the older amps are particularly flakey. Specifically the volume control knob becomes very fiddly, where it only produces audio if it's in juuuust the right position. We're in a case now where we are having to use Teams for some remote learning and these amps are flaking out in the room and we're looking to get them replaced.

 

I was wondering what sort of replacements I should be looking at. Maybe we need to look away from something with a volume control knob? Ideally we'd prefer something with downward facing cable inputs, instead of outward because they end up getting smashed by the back of a chair or something.

 

Anyone got any suggestions?

Do you actually need it as a separate amp etc? (Guess room size dependant)

 

We don't pay £90 on a pair of active speakers normally. Like the Sahara/Clever style sets etc

I doubt it, I'm just going off what's already in the room. All rooms have speakers, but they're not self powered, they get it from the amp. The speakers also have bare speaker wires that are terminated in the amp. If you're using speakers without a separate amp, are they mounted above/in line with the top of a whiteboard? If so, what do you do about the volume control of the speakers?

 

Our classrooms are generally average size, for ~30 students. What sort of speakers are you using in your classrooms?

Has remote control as well which helps remove the people playing with the speakers, and as it's active style just means one plug and done It's just standard RCA to Jack etc so easy replacements if they do knacker cables too

 

(Edit - As a side note there's a thread on here somewhere talking about the different actives people use for sized rooms if you wanted something punchier)

Could get something cheap like a LEPY amp and mount it to the wall ?

Sorry, bit late to the party, but WD40 is great at getting these wall mounted amps working again. If you really want to buy new, I've also used avpartsmaster for speakers (and projectors) many times before and they always provide great service and pricing.

You (someone who can wield a soldering iron) could probably repair the existing ones for pence. Either re-flow the solder on the vol resistor, or replace it.

Pair of active speakers and set the volume to max and then control the main volume from the connected device.

The active wall speakers are the way to go. @Steve21 mentions (used to be saharas) They are not only loud enough but do very well but clear enough so that you can hear the speaker. We used to get them for our mono VHS 3rd generation tapes...

 

We still get them turn them on, set the volume and they'll always work. They don't squelch, or power down unexpectedly no humming or buzzing and nice long leads. They include wall brackets.

 

The only alternative, I've been considering are sound bars for TVs, some also have wall mounts. (but may power save and have many inputs.)
