Server Demoted but still there!

Just demoted a 2008 R2 server, dcpromo went fine but on logging back in all the AD components are still there, in AD it has gone from domain controllers container. It's still there in sites and services but no ntds settings under it.

 

Anyone seen this behaviour before?

When you demote a DC it is still a member of the domain post domotion, also the AD management tools aren't removed so you'll still be able to access users and computers etc.

 

If you enter \\severname in run command do you see Netlogon and Sysvol? If not it sounds like it worked as expected

You are correct! No sysvol or netlogon showing. Guess I Can shut it down permanently now. Thanks

Remove it from the domain first, should tidy things up a bit more.

There may be something of it in ADSIEDIT somewhere but making changes in their can have catastrophic effects so make sure AD is backed up and confident about what you are doing. But if it is just the tools you should be clear, the fact it still shows in Sites and Services could be a factor.

Yep did that, all seems to be ok so far!
