Licensing needed to move to serverless school setup with o365

I currently have the standard on prem win 10, office and sccm licensing with a1 plus on top. 2 servers running server os's. Dc, fs etc etc

We've moved a lot of our files into onedrive and sharepoint and I want to start moving to a more cloud based serverless setup.

My problem is I dont know what licenses I need and so far suppliers aren't giving me answers

I still need the on prem stuff to make everything work as it is but I'm guessing I need the cloud stuff as well on top while I go throigh the process of moving services to azure.

I dont want to have to keep tacking bits on as I go id prefer to get a years worth of licensing that covers us.

My understanding so far is i need both on lrem standard licensing and then also the cloud stuff such as an e3 license.

Should I just get the on prem stuff for now as my licenses run out in 14 days and add in the cloud stuff afterwards?

 

We also use power bi at the moment

Depending on what you need on prem, Microsoft 365 A3 might be the thing for you.

Well you clearly need licences for everything you’re using, so if you’re intending to change to being ‘serverless’ but aren’t quite there yet, and your current yearly deal is within days of running out then you need the on prem licences for one more year plus the cloud ones.

 

You’ll need the Edu equivalent of Microsoft 365 E3, which I think is A3 as Psydii suggests. This will include the O365 suite plus extras like Azure AD premium and Intune. You may want to consider if ATP is necessary too. You do need proper advice from a licensing specialist to confirm this.

I'm stuck in our financial end of year so I'm stuck with suppliers that are already on the system. They seem to be struggling to quote me at the moment and keep saying solution. They want another meeting to discuss I need to move one of my DCs to Azure?

There probably is more to it than I'm seeing but if it come to it I can renew my licenses as is for on prem and then just license for the cloud stuff separately in September.

 

If anyone that already has this licenses reads this let me know what you have. I'm trying to kill two birds with one license while getting the best price

MS A5 (for the additional ATP, AIP, PBX and Advanced eDiscovery stuff) but we used to have MS A3

 

The killer for us was on premises SQL - to get the best pricing we needed to hit a particular seat ovs-es count. The lowest cost way was to licence all desktops for Windows 10 Edu and then the number of SQL Core licences we needed. This resulted in paying twice for Windows 10 (as it comes in MS E3/5) but it was still cheaper than any other way of getting SQL Server + Software Assurance.

 

We are not all in on cloud - MIS / Cashless Catering / Service Desk / Library (and therefore AD). All more expensive to run in cloud, even when considering the above. For individual schools* running VMs of any significant size in Azure (or any cloud) can be like burning money. I found it hard to justify given our existing server and storage hardware on site. At some point the annual maintenance contract for the on-prem infrastructure will cross a line, making moving the VMs to the cloud or the services to a equivalent SaS provider a good value proposition. But not this year, last year or the year before.

We have a nice simple setup. Its a girls' secondary with sixthform. We don't have anything fancy so it won't be overly difficult to move. We definitely don't have on prem SQL other than SCCM which will be dropped for Intune.

We are a fair way into the cloud currently and some of the stuff that is on prem has licensing to be used with azure instead of AD link such as our filtering.

My main sticking points so far is cashless catering and printing both of which I'm sure there are cloud solutions for we can move to

 

For better or for worse we're going full serverless using SharePoint and teams with one on one devices for students. Its our leaderships goal and i'm along for the ride
