Our SLT are using Google Meet for their meetings and complaining that when they try to "present" that the Chromebooks cannot cope. SLT have Viglen Chromebook 360's and the meetings usually involve about 6-8 people.

Has anyone else come across issues like this with Google Meet?

Not on our Chromebooks, but they aren't the Viglen ones. Is it the 360 or 360C?

Either way both of them are woefully underpowered devices. The original has a 2015 entry level Celeron processor, and the C has that processors replacement from 2016 in it.

It wouldn't surprise me that it might struggle, especially if they have a few extensions installed and some tabs open.

My former work insisted on getting the absolute cheapest Chromebooks possible. We ended up with the Viglen Chromebook 11 devices. One teacher moved year groups and ended up with them. They were certainly not happy that they had previously had Acer Spin 11s and suddenly those were their devices. I can't speak of how good the 360s are, but if they are anything like the 11s, you might want to cycle them to children and see if the SLT are eager to have something with a bit more oompf!

Our Meets are crashing all over the shop this morning, both in school for Y6 and remotely. The Google services dashboard looks fine.

Just wondering what is going on? Is it related to the roll out of some Meet changes that started yesterday?

I got one teacher this morning that showed a recording of their meet. Could see her perfectly on camera but her presentation screen share was a blur.

We've had Meet work just fine on cheap-when-we-bought-them laptops from 9 years ago reimaged with ChromeOS (CloudReady), so hardware shouldn't be a huge issue.

There are reports from last night / this morning of "large scale" DDoS attacks on services in the US, which might be affecting various systems and available bandwidth. It's possibly more likely to simply be an issue with one service that has then had a cascade effect on other services, rather like the Amazon outage a few years ago where someone accidently added an extra zero to a command-line option and took down 50% of hardware for maintanance instead of 5%...

is this not just bad connectivity?

Could be. I've yet to have a dig into the meet quality logs.

Just had it come in this morning which along with this thread made me think its possibly related and to throw my problem in there in case others had it too.

There was an issue with YouTube for much of last night two if using domain accounts.

Ah - interesting, just had one helpdesk ticket arrive telling of Meet quality / performance issues and another ticket about YouTube. I'll get the user to try with a non-domain-logged-in browser and see if there's any change.

Hmm - Google rolled out a bunch of updates yesterday (15th of June), latest Chrome version is now 83.0.4103.106. That update probably hasn't made it round to all devices yet (we've just had someone report their machine has just auto-updated to 83.0.4103.97, which I think is the previous update from 3 weeks ago) - it might be worth having people check for ChromeOS updates and see if that improves anything.

At least part of the update seems to have been related to Meet as the Meet settings in the Google Admin domain control panel now have their own new dedicated settings section.

Yeah so this is very odd. It is happening across devices (PC/Mac/Chromebook); On/Offsite; wired/WiFi/Staff/Pupils

I have Google on the case.
