What licenses do we need?

Hi,

 

What licenses do we need for the below:

 

2 Physical Servers – each consist of 2 processors 16 core

8 VMs

 

Looking for Windows Server Standard

Thats exactly the same setup as ours assuming its 16 cores and 4 vms per host

 

We needed 64 licences

I'm assuming that is 2 x 8 core processors per server and 8 x vm's per server.

 

That will mean you need 4 x 16 core licences per server (each one gives you 2 vm's) so a total of 8 x 16 core licences - you could go for 64 x 2 core licences.

Check on the pricing but if you get Windows Datacentre that gives you unlimited virtual machine licenses.

If you have a lot of VM's it makes the licensing much simpler.

If you ever wish to migrate VMs from one server to another, you need to license for the maximum number of instances of Windows you might end up running on each host. So, if you want to run those 2 hosts in a failover cluster, so if one fails the other can take over (or so you can take one down for maintenance), you need to license the full 8 VMs worth for each - the licenses from one server can't be transferred to the other server. So, you would need to double the number of licenses.

Can I just confirm:

 

Number of physical server = 2

Number of physical processors per server = 2

Cores per processor = 8 (total 16)

vm's per server = 4 (used as failover so potentially max 8 per server)

 

If this is right, you need 4 x Standard licences per server

So how much is Number of physical server = 2

Number of physical processors per server = 2

Cores per processor = 8 (total 16)

vm's per server = Datacentre unlimited for vms
