Hello,

I am looking to purchase a NAS for home use. I am looking at the Synology DS918. I am wondering if anyone has experience with these NAS and using them over WIFI please? I have read online people have purchased dongles but had mixed results.

Unfortunately wired connections are not an option at home.

Thanks

Not used the 918 but have used a wide variety of Synology NASs with good results with all of them (even the ones with timebomb Atom chipsets).

Not used with wifi, but is powerline definitely out?

The OS is surprisingly flexible so I’m sure that compatibility is pretty good, but wifi flakiness is always a concern - it helps that they have USB 3.0 ports though.

I used to use a Powerline device with a pass through socket:

Powerline in the wall socket, multi-way power step plugged into the Powerline. Would that arrangement be possible?

The socket is miles away. The power strip is going through a hole in a unit. So it will involve a long cable and drilling holes into furniture that isn’t mine.

Could you use a device that can act as a wireless bridge (so you don't need to use a USB dongle with the Synology)? i.e.

NAS --- << Ethernet >> --- Bridge --- << Wi-Fi >> --- Wireless Router

I've got the baby brother of that at home, the DS218. No complaints from me, it's been great. There's lots of bells and whistles if you're inclined to tweak, but I don't use any myself.

Mines on wired LAN direct to my wireless router. If it were me, I'd try and find a way to site the box somewhere you can cable the LAN, than trying to get a wireless connection. Sorry, not the answer you were looking for!

That’s a good idea. Not something I have done before. I will have a look what ubiquity have.
