Courses- where to start

Hi,

 

I have been IT technician for about 6 years. Started without any knowledge and learned on the job. As I am good with day to day tasks there is massive gap in my knowledge and what follows lack of confidence to do even better in this job. I rely heavily on my IT support company and this feel uncomfortable.

 

Are there any courses you could recommend? Network and servers mainly. Should I start with something like CompTIA or go straight for Microsoft courses? I know there is a lot of free knowledge out there but i feel i need step by step structured approach.

 

Any advice will be very appropriated.

But I suppose the question is where do you want to go? Is being a desktop/ all round admin what you see yourself doing or are you thinking of specialising?

 

One thing I will say is learn >_ (PowerShell) look at Don Jones month of lunches books on PS also while talking of his books read his how to find a wolf in siberia.

 

The above is my initial recommendations and these will not serve you wrong no matter where you are.

Thank you for taking time to reply. At the moment I would like to fill in the gaps I have with regards to servers/network management. I need this at my current position and feel it won't be wasted time even if in future direction of my professional life changes a bit. I will definitely look in to you recommendations. It very much depends where you want to go as @HPlum78 mentioned. PowerShell is a good call as it is used in not only Microsoft but Veeam, vCenter and a few others the syntax changes a but the basic format is cross platform and many basic commands are built in and transferable.

 

I did a CCNA in 2003 at a local college but then done a self study MCP in Server 2005. I just scraped thru the MCP because I jumped chapters thinking I'd learn't enough thru experience.

 

What ever you decide to do make sure you top up what you have learned with home labs etc and keep up to date with tech developments.

I was thinking the same. It looks like we would have to do 2016 first or wait. Have you done any other courses?

If you are starting I would suggest that you start with something that doesn't go out of date - so PowerShell is good and quite impressive

 

The problem with e.g. Server 2016 if that it goes out of date and also you might end up applying for a job that uses an older version - schools being schools and all that

 

Networking is also always a good one as it doesn't really change all that much
