Is there a way to see engagement for a particular class in google classroom. The reports I can see in gsuite admin only seem to show an overview for the trust. Teachers want to know how many students in the class have logged in.

In your Google Console, if you select the OU you are interested in you can download a spreadsheet that shows the most recent login for users:

 

 

I have sent (an edited version) of this to staff who requested it when they wanted to know which students had logged in, and which had not logged in at all.

In your Google Admin Console navigate to Users. Then select the OU you want to download the data for (in this case, if it were me, I would select 'Students' which contains all of our students)

 

In the menu across the top, select 'Download Users'

 

 

When the download dialog appears, select 'All user info columns and currently selected columns' with the radio button selector [i also selected 'Comma-separated values (.csv)']

Yes. Their most recent logon, or if they have not logged on at all.

 

There may be an alternative in the teacher view of Google Classroom, but I haven't used that part of the system.

I don't think the last logon date is a good thing to go on because I don't think this updates when users are using apps as they always stay logged in.

And it doesn't answer the original question about seeing which students have been using Google Classroom.

classworkzoom.com might be an answer for you? It's teacher led though. There is also GAT+ for Education you might want to look at.

 

I don't think there is a perfect answer for this. Solutions that are out there don't seem to be able to collect the data across the board. Some use extensions for example, which would cut out mobile device use, and anyone who signs into a browser that isn't Chrome. I think the answer has to be (currently) that perhaps the teacher checks if the work is being done!

I'd say this is a job for the teacher (I am one). I judge engagement by the quality of work submitted and if it's been done. I'm not bothered if they have gone on Classroom - have they actually done and submitted assignments are what matters. As a teacher, this is easy to see in the overview page. We have a Google form on our staff site when you can highlight students who are not completing work and then the powers that be take action.

 

However, I do run a GAM script daily that does dump all of the assignments into a Google Sheet - which then feeds other dashboards - basic details here: https://wpsit.blogspot.com/2019/02/import-domain-google-classroom.html on my blog. However, how often someone looks at or logs into Classroom tells you nothing about the level of engagement. Thats a teacher judgement.

I pull classroom info using gam. here are useful commands for getting times

 

gam print users firstname lastname lastlogintime

gam report users parameters gmail:last_interaction_time

gam report users fields 'classroom:last_interaction_time'
