weirdness this evening (not during the day) is due to me hunting down the problem with various traces. I have been shutting apache down for 5 mins here and there to tweak the config but I have found out why its been slow.

Basically chines script kiddies have been trying to brute force apache to honour proxy requests.

It has not worked but they have been trying all day. They would establish a connection that would do nothing but they did it on mass and apaches limits were hit. Thats why people could not connect but the server showed no load. It was just busy sending "no" messages to the chinese ip's.

I have found 3 ip's responsible and have blocked them so it should be better now until the next script kiddie tries :)
