As he correctly points out, desktop networking hasn't really evolved in the past 20 years, with 1Gbps being the standard since the very early 2000's and 10 gig being silly expensive, so here is an interim measure. Whilst 1Gbps is perfectly fine for the average desktop doing office work, media and other PC's being used for creative tasks could well do with some extra 'oomph' when it comes to file access. Anyway, the vid is below and makes for some interesting viewing.

There aren't that many places that have 6a to every socket to allow 10 gig to the desktop.

We'd need approximately 250 of them. Or, you can get a 24 port 2.5G switch for £1100. So, 10G would be at least £55k. 2.5G would be about £35k. Oh, not to mention having to plug in 250 switches vs 32. More realistically, Ubiquiti do 16 port 10GbE switches for about £430 each. Still need the SFP+ modules, but you could do it much more reasonably.

mavhc Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 Within a cab, or a room, 10Gb is doable, because you can use the £30 cables, or Cat6e cables. Having to replace the ethernet cables installed around the building/house is the problem.

Personally i don't make the most of my home 1Gb so i doubt i'll be going up to 2.5Gb anytime soon! Which probably goes for the vast majority of people who don't have a home NAS

Until they fix that, 10gbit won't ever get popular for the consumer. Which switch have you got? The Ubiquiti US-XG-6POE is meant to be very quiet and the MikroTik switch mentioned above is silent.

But you need to watch for throughput drops if you anything above basic layer 2 I have a 4port 10Gb at home, this one https://www.eurodk.com/en/products/crs/mikrotik-crs305-1g-4sin . But I now wish I'd bought the CRS309 as I have ran out of ports, lol. Doing video work at home I have a 10Gb network between my desktop and a SSD filled Synology NAS where I back the videos up to off my desktop.
