Unable to join the domain on another VM

Apologies for what may seem a basic question - server newbie here!

 

I've set up a Server 2019 install with Hyper V - and now 4 VMs. All 4 VMs have been given their own static IP and connect to the internet etc (via Google DNS initially). I can also ping each of the VMs from one another.

 

I have set up a Domain controller on VM1 & a forest / domain name / NetBIOS name. I'm trying to set up another DC on VM2 - and installed the role, but I'm having issues when trying to retrieve the current Forest.

 

I then went into Computer name / Domain changes on VM2 & when I type the domain name in, it prompts for a username + password then eventually says "the following error occurred attempting to join the domain - the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted" if I type anything else in it immediately returns an error, so it must be identified the domain & attempting to connect somehow.

 

Any ideas on how I can connect these 2 VMs?

Sounds like you have not added the DC as the DNS address.

 

You can’t have DNS pointing directly to Google in a domain.

You will need to change DNS to a DNS DC.

 

Example,

 

Primary DNS = (enter ip of dc with dns)

 

Secondary DNS = 8.8.8.8

 

I tried secondary dns with 8.8.4.4 and it doesn’t connect to the internet.
