BBC bitesize videos

Apologies if this is the wrong area.

 

Does anyone else have issues playing BBC bitesize videos? We have been asked about this one https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z6wfgk7

 

It tries to play with the flash player rather than the HTML5 one. Other bitesize videos seem to do the same. Just wondering if this is something with our setup or with the BBC.

Same issue.

 

Some of the videos are so old they require flash and BBC probably wont update them.

 

If you are using Chrome you can enable flash and then it should work.

I had to enable flash to run on the website in FF, there was no prompt. Just a red icon for some media on the page

Ok, thanks for that. Its kind of what I was thinking.

 

I was just hoping for a longer term solution once flash goes EOL.

Unless the BBC redevelops some of these, they are going to stop working. They probably also fall under the part of the BBC that the government thinks should cease forthwith.

If you remember about 15 years ago, the BBC were having a big push into education under the "BBC Learning" brand. They had a big stand at BETT with lots of branded merchandising and resources planned to be released for free to schools. That was ended because it was considered to compete with commercial offerings by the Labour Government of the time.

 

You can almost guarantee things like Bitesize will be considered the same by the current Tory Government very shortly. I doubt most of the Flash based resources will be updated.

ISTR Talking to the BBC staff at BETT back then and they said the pressure had come from some companies in the education sector who claimed it was unfair competition. They shut down the resources, but I do seem to recall they then reused a lot of it, but spread over numerous BBC pages.

TBH, it was really good content as well.

I'd expect the quickest way to tell is to F12 and then look at the console or network tabs
