I've recently gone to full cloud with office 365 (no hybrid anymore) The accounts are still synced via local AD. I've had a member of staff change their name and we have a naming rule set for them.

Now I've changed the staff members name and it's synced to o365 I can't figure out how to get o365's exchange to re-apply the naming rule to update their email address.

This is NOT the UPN, I'll change that manually later.

Does full cloud have the "Automatically update email addresses based on the email address policy applied to this recipient" tick box on the Email Address tab? If so untick that, apply, then re-tick and apply and it will re-evalute it for the policies.

I've not seen that anywhere.

I don't think this feature exist in full online, this blog - https://practical365.com/exchange-online/office-365-email-address-policies/ shows its not actually functional in O365 and the documentation on MS site is all related to on-premise installs

Use the New-EmailAddressPolicy cmdlet to create email address policies. In Exchange Online, email address policies are only available for Office 365 groups.

that is from https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/exchange/email-addresses-and-address-books/new-emailaddresspolicy?view=exchange-ps

So looks like its script time for now if your now full online only.

Requiring an on premise Exchange server is, quite bizarrely, an MS requirement for hybrid but it's totally not needed. All changes (e.g enable archive mailbox, change last name) are in AD, so you can make all the changes you want purely manipulating AD. No Exchange server nor exchange cmdlets required.

Some orgs have an exchange server turned off, some just live with the risk and save the hassle.

All I do to update an email address in office 365 is change the proxy address in our local ad and sync it to office 365 SMTP:email for primary smtp:email for aliases. Not sure if that is what you are trying to do.

I agree with the above - on the Attributes tab, update the ProxyAddresses entry.

SMTP: (in upper case) is for their new name and smtp: (lower case) is for their old name and any other aliases. Should be as simple as that!

This

However, from memory, I don't think that changes the login address, and that has to be done using powershell (although I've also thankfully not had to do it for a while). I'm sure I wrote some notes down somewhere from the last time I had to deal with it...

The beaminstersch.mail.onmicrosoft.com is your initial domain name for Office365, it can't be removed (from O365) but you can change the default as you already have.

To add multiple proxyaddresses, you go into AD > User > Attribute editor > Double-click ProxyAddresses > Type in a value (SMTP for primary, smtp for aliases) and then press Add > Repeat for more addresses

In the event of a staff name change, I do the following:

Scenario where Jane Smith has changed name to Jane Henry -

 1. Rename account and display name, change mail address/upn
 2. AD Attribute editor - Delete "SMTP:[email protected]" and add in "smtp:[email protected]" and "SMTP:[email protected]".
 3. Sync changes to O365 using Powershell

Invoke-Command -ComputerName DC1 -ScriptBlock {Start-AdSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Delta}

4. Connect to O365 and change UPN (only necessary if you're not syncing UPN changes in Azure AD Connect)

Connect-MsolServiceSet-MsolUserPrincipalName -newuserprincipalname [email protected] -userprincipalname [email protected]

one last thing, how do I set the reply address or the default address.

I've added the new addresses btw just waiting for sync.

@Chaniel I am syncing upns' I only discovered this feature this morning!

I was going to wait on changing the UPN as I don't explain to users that the UPN and email addresses are NOT the same thing ;)

I've kept the old smtp addresses as well, so no emails are lost during transition. is there a way of speccing the smtp address that needs to be the reply / default address?

cheers
