Our current plans are:

Office 365 A1 for Students

Office 365 A1 for faculty

Does anyone know if Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection should be included in this. It would seem it partially is but elements like "Safe Links" and "Safe Attachments" are not available.

Information on here seems to point to the fact it should be available https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/security/office-365-security/office-365-atp

Anyone got this enabled?

ATP is only included in the Office 365 Enterprise E5, Office 365 Education A5, and Microsoft 365 Business plans. For anyone on the following plans, ATP is an additional subscription:

  • Exchange Online Plan 1
  • Exchange Online Plan 2
  • Exchange Online Kiosk
  • Exchange Online Protection
  • Office 365 Business Essentials
  • Office 365 Business Premium
  • Office 365 Enterprise E1
  • Office 365 Enterprise E3
  • Office 365 Enterprise F1
  • Office 365 A1
  • Office 365 A3

I suspect like most schools, you'll be on the Office 365 A1 plan, which ATP isn't included with.

Perfect, that clears that up for me. Be interested to know if anyone else use this service and how they rate it?

We have a few A5 licences. They do the job very well. There is no sane way to keep all the features having an E5 licence brings to a tenant completely isolated to only your A5 licenced accounts, so all users end up feeling the benefits.

Safelinks and Safe Attachments do add a delay to mail delivery, but the benefits are worth it. We saw two or three incidents a year until going A5, and now we have had none. Sometimes something gets through, but usually into the spam folder, and ATP will retroactively reach into mailboxes and delete malware once it has been identified.

We've actually gone for the M365A5 rather than O365A5 - so we get Windows Defender ATP and Azure ATP as well. This surfaces a huge amount of telemetry, for example you can see what processes accessed what files and urls, and cross reference users/computers at a click of a button. This makes investigations into data breaches or naughty students (or staff) a whole lot easier. They are also just rolling out into preview web filtering, which is per machine for now - but again having it all in one console makes it easy to investigate what a user might have been doing, and provides that extra layer of protection against users wandering of onto site they ought to be avoiding.
