RJ45 Coupler and POE

Hi everyone,

 

Does anyone know if it is fine to use a RJ45 Female to Female Coupler for joining two CAT6 Ethernet wires when using POE?

 

My CCTV uses POE to power the cameras and one of the cables is about 5 meters too short so was thinking of just adding a coupler....But obviously dont want any fire risks, etc.

Used many and never had an issue.

Just make sure you use a decent one - not one of those plastic ones as they come apart SO easily and are therefore a large shock/fire risk.

If its internal, it should be fine.

 

If external, I would look at replacing the cable, or move the joint inside.

 

We had lots of problems with corroded joints when an installer put these in an external junction box. Every time the weather changed the cameras would go down.

 

If its solid core cable, I'd use some sort of IDC/krone connection rather than rj45 as you will get a much better connection. Or the Jelly crimps BT use I think can be used on cat5 cable and are sealed.

always keep a few around in case of cable breaks... keep getting squirrels chewing through our pool phone cable

Not too worried about the connection getting wet as will be indoors but more about the power going through it.

I'm using outdoor rated CAT6 as the cable goes partly outside but just wondered how the coupler will affect performance or be ok with power through it.

For CCTV installs like that I normally just terminate the cable into an RJ45 module inside a backbox with a blanking cover (so not into a faceplate, just loose in the backbox). I'll then run the cable from the CCTV camera into that backbox so it's connected, but can't be unplugged.

 

 

Think of using a coupler as being the same as if you ran a 10m cable from a port on the wall to the CCTV camera. It's not going to have an effect on performance and will be fine with power going through it (cameras are pretty low voltage anyway)

Some cheap couplers only have 2 pairs connected. But make sure you do not go over 100m length
