mavhc Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 Right, Microsoft backup everything, problem is you can't restore from their backups, they're backups to solve their hw failures and mistakes, not yours. They'll have multiple copies in different data centers, and tape backups.

As luck would have it, we already have VEEAM and Synology, and I've just bought a new 32TB on-site backup server. For those people not wanting to back up to on-site, Spanning is pretty neat although it does come at a price. At my previous school, we only backed up staff accounts as we couldn't afford/justify to do all the students too.

I use that at a few schools but have found their support very iffy lately, otherwise it's a great product. Looking forward will be moving to onsite backups for the rest of my schools as it has been great and very cheap.

We have decided to back up critical staff members 365 accounts to our site (all staff and students was too expensive and probably overkill anyway). Works really well. Only small gripe is that we have to have the 365 backup on a different VM from the Veeam server as 365 doesn't natively do backup to tape as part of the process. So we just backup the whole VM to tape. Have to say going from Backup Exec to Veeam has been a breath of fresh air! 1
TwistedHelixis Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 One issue I have thought of with some of these cloud backup systems is that some of them require a cloud domain account to access the backups, so what happens if that cloud domain account gets hacked or deleted. Are you blocked from accessing your backups the one time you actually need to be able to restore. Seems like a bit of a catch 22.
mavhc Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 I'd have random gmail accounts for registering domains and backup stuff, 2FA with backup codes printed out and put in a safe in a signed sealed envelope, no one's going to be tricking a domain registrar to give gmail.com to them, but it's super easy for that to happen to your own domains

Yeah I read this on their forum - You install the Veeam 365 on a seperate virtual/physical machine & back that up - What have you got the retention set on the veeam365 instance? In theory if you set it to "7 days" then back that machine up using your normal retention you can always restore from a point in time?

There's 2 accounts, the one for reading the data, and the one on the backup service for writing the data. I may have to make an exception to "OAuth all the things" for this case.

Even just catering for staff, a mega expensive 36TB onsite backup solution is never going to be enough to restore their files. ‘I think I had it before Christmas....’ you know that happens! What to do...?

Yes it's not technically a proper backup in the event of catastrophic Office 365 failure, but it covers against users accidentally deleting their files. For our SharePoint site I do back that up to our Synology NAS as I had a case of an accidentally deleted folder that contained literally tens of thousands of files. It was a nightmare to restore through the SharePoint recycle bin, even a script took 7 days to get it all back. So since then I run an overnight backup with the Synology Office 365 backup add on.

Can u please elaborate on the retention polices, is this OneDrive polices that can be set above what I think is their 30 days in recycle bin and 100 version limit? So you don’t do any onsite user OneDrive backups? I don’t suppose MS offer a license option that gives 365 day deleted file retention. Thanks

Most of the restore requests I get are from staff accidentally deleting or breaking files, and mailbox wise you never know when a teacher may have emails relating to safeguarding or suchlike. I've not implemented a solution yet, but the options I've seen so far: Veeam - charged per mailbox, education discount is 30% of commercial price Redstor - charged on data volume Arcserve - charged on data volume at around £2k per TB

We're paying per-user for cloud backup of Office365, covering all staff (except PGCE placement trainees, invigilators, cleaners) but no students. The only student need would be for coursework, and they should notice if they delete/break a document quick enough that the normal recycle bin process (2x28 days) will be sufficient.
