Restarting dns server impact

Hi

I am suppose to restart dns server to install the update and will have to fillin impact form. I have done my research about update. Can someone tell me what can go wrong when we restart dns server . Updates are safe

Where is your dns located, on your domain controller? , or is it a dedicated server, you have consider your end users while doing this and the downtime you will have, probably best to do it out of production hours as your dns is a critical infrastructure component Edited January 27, 2020 by Jcx500

How many DNS servers do you have?

Hopefully you have at least 2, in which case re-starting one will have no impact on your end users.

Sorry for late reply , dns is installed on primary domain controler. We have secondary domain controler as well.

 

I will restart the sever out of service hour. I am lol to put on impact form.

 

User would not be able to login if server did not boot up

 

I have checked and other two days have dns service running on them and dns role is installed as well.

If you have 2 domain controllers and the DNS is an Active Directory Intergrated Zone and desktop clients have both AD servers listed as DNS servers in their IP config there should be no impact from DNS point of view.

 

If the AD server has one DHCP server, file shares or applications running on the server it may cause issues .

Thank you guys, might be one one last question. We have just one DHCP server, so I have written in impact form that PCs will start getting disconnected from domain after some time if dhcp service stop working/ did not get restarted. Please confirm it.

I can confirm that, I have had that problem before. The shortest lease time I have seen on DHCP other than for testing is an hour for a Coffee shop so a reboot should not cause any major problems.

 

Setting up a failover pair is very simple but be sure that you copy all the settings across, the wizard misses a lot of them.
