[ltsb, 1809] Printers don't apply until 2nd log on

Hi all,

 

We have having a strange issue where printers are not added until the user has logged off and back on, after that the printers show up fine. The only error in the event viewer says the printer couldn't be contacted, however the printer is working fine. We add our printers by machine using the Computer>Policies>Windows Settings>Deployed printers policy

 

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? The only sort of fix I have read online is to add a gpupdate /force as a logon script but that didn't make any difference.

I've had this issues with from 1607 right up to 1809. I've tried everything over the last couple of years and there's plenty of threads on here about printers not appearing.

 

I gave up in the end and just tell people to logoff and back on again, and welcome to the world of Windows 10!

We've been running 10 for most of the last year here, never had this problem until the last few days although nothing has been changed. Never seen it at any of the primaries I used to support either. Bloody nightmare and seemingly no logic behind it.

We actually had the similar issues with deploying printers and Windows 10. It would be very inconsistent, but a second login would always do the trick.

 

What we actually found out is that the mapping seemed to fail the first time, but never on the second. We now use a small vbscript that maps the printer twice (and sets it as default if you so wish). It's a bit silly that that is the case, but at some point if it just works you go with it. It's pretty much worked 100% for the last couple of years and iterations of Windows 10. This is what we use (save it as .vbs):

We actually mananaged to resolve this (touch wood) by setting this key:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Device Metadata\PreventDeviceMetadataFromNetwork

to 1. I meant to post in here with the update but wanted to give it a few days to be sure it was working.

How do you make sure students only have access to the proper printer for the location they're in? We have lots of lessons in different IT suites all around the school and we would have havock if the kids had all the printers available at the same time

We have Find-Me printing deployed with PaperCut. Students have to be in front of the printer and enter their printing ID number, no chance of random print jobs coming out everywhere.

I'm jealous. I've worked with a few find-me printing systems in the past but we don't have anywhere we can keep the printers here without it being a health and safety issue

We've only recently had Find-Me printing installed. Before that we just trusted students to not abuse printing. Maybe we're lucky and have well behaved students???
