LTurner3692 Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 We are looking at moving are Serves, giving us the perfect time to replace all the old UPS's we have. What are people's recommendations on what to get? We have 7 servers and 9 switches.
bald_pig Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 You're going to have to calculate the load of your switches and spec accordingly. I've generally stuck with APC, and prefer multiple smaller UPS over one large one, splitting critical servers across multiple UPS. 1
Jawloms Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 All my servers and switches have two power supplies, and I have two UPSs, so each device is plugged in to both UPSs. Each UPS has its own power supply on a different fuse board. APC here too.

PlantHead Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 (edited) 2 UPS's per server would be nice. We have 1 PSU plugged into a UPS the other PSU plugged into the mains. APC UPS's have always served me well (if you can't have a site wide UPS) Goto their website and put in your servers, it will tell you what UPS and battery you need. I thought id ask you lot in case someone came up with a different way of doing it. Currently, we have 3 just doing are servers, I get about 15 mins of up time after a power cut, all servers are split between the UPS''s.

We do similar, but have the other PSUs plugged into a different output from the same UPS. If the UPS goes to battery power, one of the outputs can be turned off earlier that the other. I'm assuming this then extends the overall runtime (I haven't tested this principle, I'd just like to add) to allow for running a bit longer before shutdowns get triggered. When shopping for a UPS, expecially if you're going for one big one rather than several small ones, check what mains supply and connector it will need. Some of the bigger ones need a jumbo commando clip and big beefy mains supply, which may require a call to your pet electrician.
LTurner3692 Posted December 17, 2019 Author Posted December 17, 2019 Ideally I would prefer smaller ones, the idea is to have two different rings set into the new Server room, allowing us to split the load between them, at least then if one ring dies i will still have the other to keep me going.

PotNoodleTech Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 Yes having two is best split between the Dual PSU on the server. But be aware, 7 servers and 9 switches means that if you get anything less than about 3000va per UPS (x2) you will have less than 30 mins runtime, probably.
ITGURU Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 APC here - all servers and core switches have dual PSUs - one is connected to the UPS which is fed by one ring main. The mains connection is on a separate fuse board so in event of a trip, power continues (providing all dual PSUs are in working order)
