FYI installing SSD in them is actually pretty easy - you need some cheap glass suckers off amazon to pull the front glass off easily, then it's just a few (8 i think?) screws to take the screen out and about 3 push fit connectors.

 

I've done this to all of ours and it makes a big difference to their responsiveness, so much so I've decided to keep all our 2011-2013 units running for a couple more years!

Yes we've done a couple, but we don't want to keep our Mac infrastructure running for just a few machines.

 

There are some fan issues with non "apple" hard drives too, due to wrong firmware reporting.

Plus, they might not get another MacOS update after this one, as they just made the cut this time around. Still lovely for a home machine though. I should have moved quicker.

The fan issues are because Apple doesn't take the temperature info from the S.M.A.R.T data, they use their own sensor on the Apple specific drives. There's an app called SSDFanControl which takes the S.M.A.R.T reading and uses that instead, then no more 100% fans 100% of the time

These were the thin edge 2012 model. Getting the display panel out was just as easy, however the glass is glued in place, so you need to heat the edges and cut the adhesive. Annoying at best!

Don't heat the adhesive, get a little "pizza cutter" tool from iFixit that cuts it. Much simpler.

Pizza won't help you remove the screen. I mean, you can eat it to give you energy to do the work, but...

Yes I'm running it on mine, but didn't want to sell them on explaining that!!

I've found that a little heat AND the pizza tool is the quickest way!
