Powerpoint 2016 Embedded Youtube

Hi

We're having an issue where users cant play embedded youtube clips as a standard user. When going to play it just gives the error 'This video could not be started.' If powerpoint is ran as administrator it works. I've looked online with no avail can you guys help

Is it your web proxy causing the issue and you've got more relaxed rules on the admin account?

Youtube is white listed for all staff, it's only recently started happening

Might not be authenticating correctly? I'd check the logs to see if it reports anything if you haven't already.

Are you doing HTTPS inspection on youtube? because that breaks embedding unfortunately.

Had this before, it is caused by an IE security setting

 

In IE options->Advanced->Security you need to uncheck ‘do not save encrypted pages to disk’ (can be done via gpo) then PowerPoint will be able to play the videos.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but did you ever get anywhere with this issue @masond? Having the same issue here with PowerPoint 2019, testing on a machine on unfiltered connection (no proxy, no https inspection).

 

Tried the uncheck ‘do not save encrypted pages to disk’ suggestion.

Tried enabling "User Account Control: Run All Administrators in Admin Approval Mode" via GPO (suggestion on MS forums).

Tried enabling protected mode in Internet Settings via GPO (suggested in MS KB).

 

Tried various other security setting changes in internet settings - enabling active content etc as a test. Also enabled active content in PowerPoint settings too. All to no avail.

I had a similar issue that was resolved in 365 pro plus, for the 2019 installs I ran the below command - I'm sure It was something to do with a change earlier on in the year with office and how it works with IE (you might need to check and edit the folder number after \office)

 

REG ADD “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Internet” /v ForceShellExecute /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Unfortunately, this key was already in place... I've also tried adding it to "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Internet" and "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Internet" to no avail.

GPO Is: User Config > Preferences > Control Panel Settings > Internet Settings > Internet Explorer 10 > Advanced > Security > Do not save encrypted pages to disk

also bumping an old thread!

I am seeing this issue a lot on our machines - I believe it is GPO related as if I move a person from our staff group to a different one ( domain admin for example ) they can play the videos

I have already tried unchecking the encrypted pages via GPO but I have had no luck so far!

 

Did anyone manage to get a different solution?

What version of Office? In v2021 this stopped being an issue for us.
