Server Hard Drive Suggestions

Hey All

 

I am currently rebuilding one of my server hosts HP DL380 Gen 8 , I the past few months I have had lots of hard drive errors and I have replace the sas drives but am thinking while am rebuilding it to replace with SSD`s.

 

Anyone brought standard ssd`s or enterprise ?

 

ps the host is only holding its own os and few roles all the vms are on the DAS.

I'm thinking of getting 3 midrange intel SSDs and using the 3 SATA ports and software raid. D3-S4510 960GB SATA drives, about £165 each when I asked for them in April. Of course they're too busy to bother looking at my request.

For primary we’ve used decent brand ssd to hold the host OS and VM’s. Data is stored in mechanical SATA. Have had no problems on any hardware - HP, Dell, Fuji etc.

The only SSDs I have in a host are some Intel enterprise ones, which have been absolutely superb (DC S3700? Been a long time) they host SIMS on ESXi holding the DB. Worthwhile! Edited October 26, 2019 by 3s-gtech

Given 1TB SSDs are so cheap now I'm just going to use HDDs for video/archive of photos

Consumer SSDs? What’s the cut-off point of brand/quality if so? In the right type of array/flat disk pool I don’t suppose it matters so much.

I'd recommend looking at the Samsung PM883 models. £250 for 1.92TB.
