Need to manually add some devices to School Manager

Hey everyone.

 

I just bought an iPad Pro off Amazon and I need to manually add it to School Manager so we can use VPP on it.

 

Looks like I need to use Apple Configurator but no one at the office has a Mac that we can use it on. (All 10.6 Snow Leopard Macs from about 10 years ago).

 

Has anyone came across this before and if so how did you use Apple Configurator without a Mac?

 

Thinking of getting a 1 month subscription to MacStadium, a cloud-based mac provider but not sure how to use Configurator remotely.

 

Any ideas?

You need a Mac for configurator.

I assume you've tried putting the serial number into Apple School Manager. It's worked for us a surprising number of times (especially with newer purchases).

As the above says you need a Mac to use AC2 but also if this is personal device it should not be added to DEP only institution owned devices can be enroled into DEP.

Thats only for DEP'd devices though. Right ?

That's not something strange, your reseller would have requested DEP for them automatically when they ship to you.

Just to clarify a few things, yes this is an institution owned device. It was bought off Amazon since our re-seller doesn't do iPad Pros.

 

I have tried entering in the serial but it just gives me an error. May have to buy a cheap Mac off ebay or something which is unfortunate.

You are definately stuck and will have to buy a Mac.

 

Just to reiterate this important point, end users can not DEP enrol a device if the reseller has not requested this for you.

also on the mac you seem to need a more up to date mac than the one i use at one school iirc thats 10.13 and wont go higher(its a late 2009 imac iirc). I cant get that to activate any ipads though they all activate fine in their own and it made a right mess of an ipad that it tried to update to ipad os13.x to the point i had to take it to another school and use their mac (Catalina) to reinstall it Edited October 25, 2019 by sted

You can get good deals on Late 2012 Mac minis £250ish for an i7, stick an SSD in it and away you go, they can currently run Catalina. Not sure how many more macOS releases they will support though!

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini and it does the job just fine for me.

I'm sure I read that apple were going to make it so you could add non DEP devices to ASM. I guess this never actually happened.

I was hoping new iPads would allow me to add to DEP by now. We have got a MacBook that gets used once a year to do the Apple Configurator and then gets put back in its drawer.

Depends on the age of the 'pad though.

 

I have some old mini's still lurking that won't be DEP'd by AC2. Bah!

It's dependent on whether the iPad will run iOS11 if it can not then can not be manually added.
