[ms office - 2016] Templates not appearing in Word, Publisher etc Office 2016

Since we went to Windows 10, templates are not showing in any Office 2016 application

They can be got back by opening IE, going to LAN settings and taking the tick out of the "automatically detect settings" box

 

Two questions: We are moving away from IE and I cant see how to sort this problem with Chrome? (I think Chrome gets its settings from IE which opens a whole can of worms)

 

Is there a network setting or GPO somewhere that I can set this so that people can see the templates?

It sounds like you have a proxy PAC or WPAD file setup for you when you went to windows 10. I am guessing that this had a Man in the Middle certificate for web filtering, and as such, that is probably what is stopping your templates from loading. In the file for the proxy settings, an exception would need to be put in place for the location of the Office templates so that it does not try to filter them through the MiM cert.

Wasn;t your windows 10 installation done by the MAT? It may be they are best ones to say what I said to, as they would know the location of the file

IE gets its settings from the Internet Options Control Panel applet - which can be managed comprehensively using Group Policy Preferences. You should be able to carry on managing this fine, even without using IE.

That is very strange, as the behaviour you are describing (where you are having to remove Automatically Detect Proxy Settings) is that there was a proxy setting somewhere.

Without specific knowledge of your Proxy/web filtering, I would not be able to tell you the exact instructions on what needs editing. What I would say is you could change GPO to deploy settings with the Automatically Detect Proxy settings unticked but, and I cannot stress this enough, I do not know what effect this will have on your internet filtering

 

Open Group Policy Management Console (GPMC.MSC) on a Windows 8.1 or a Windows Server 2012 R2 computer.

Create a new Group Policy Object (GPO) or select an existing Group Policy Object (GPO) to modify.

Right-click the selected Group Policy Object (GPO) and click Edit and browse to:

User Configuration\Preferences\Control Panel Settings\Internet Settings

Select Internet Settings and then right-click to select New and choose the option of "Internet Explorer 10"

Configure the desired Internet Explorer Preference settings and click Apply and then OK

Run the following command at a command prompt on clients where you want the settings to apply or wait for the group policy background refresh:

 

gpupdate.exe /force

I did think about setting up a new GPO but not knowing what was already there or what else it might do, I am a bit worried about it.

 

Creating a GPO I can do! It was your talk of certificates that confused me...

 

What I dont understand is what has changed to cause this behaviour. Unless it was an update of some kind?

It get's a little confusing, In all likeliness you will have a Proxy Server run by your internet provider for your filtering. This is usually what will cause the internet to be filtered. The Certificates are to do with that and HTTPS google and stuff, I wouldn't worry to much.

 

Now there a possibility that http://clienttemplates.content.office.net/ is being blocked, it will not render properly in a browser, but I would see if you can open it or if it is blocked.

I would say it is proxy issue causing it, but the exact one is a mystery. You can turn automatically detect off in group policies. With us it is turned off because our filtering uses a bit of client software to do it rather than a traditional proxy

Ah stupid thought, did windows 7 have the Automatic Detect Proxy Settings turned off by default and windows 10 has switched it on, and that is why you have not seen it before.
