Ok so I have an HP Core Layer 3 switch.

The Data network goes through this and out to the internet through our ISP Router.

 

Now we have VoIP and the provider has given us their own Router so that Voice Traffic goes out separately.

 

I have set up a voice VLAN on our Core switch and told the Edge Switches about it.

 

Normally for a VLAN I would give it an IP on the Core and add in an IP Helper (I have different scopes for different VLANS). The Default Gateway would be our ISP Router.

For the VoIP I need the VoIP Router to dish out the DHCP addresses to phones on the same VLAN.

 

How do I do it to point traffic from the Voice VLAN to the new Router?

 

The new Router has been configured with an internal IP on the same voice VLAN.

 

I tried putting the VoIP Router address into the Layer 3 Switch under VLANS but it gets rejected and puts the ISP Router address back in.

 

Any ideas please?

I didn’t do it that way when I had 2 internet lines (1 for VoIP)

 

I just untagged the port on the core switch the router was connected to (vlan 20). Then I just tagged all the uplinks and set vlans on the phones. That way it’s the router given out the IP

If you have an onsite firewall I would do it through that.

 

For example, I'd have all VLANs going through my L3 switch and then at my Sophos XG box, I would have VOIP VLAN go through Interface X (which would be connected to the other router).

We don't control the Firewall. Provided by ISP.

Keep the VOIP vlan as layer 2 to their router. I.e. just present to their router as either untagged or tagged on the core switch that connects to it and do not have an IP address on your core.

Thanks. Got it working, tagged the port that goes to their router, tagged uplink ports and untagged phones.

 

Seems to be common place for VOIP providers to use this sort of setup. It does mean that you do not have to worry about setting up DHCP options i.e. TFTP .
