DrBeaker Posted September 23, 2019 Posted September 23, 2019 Hi All, Just after the advice of the community here. I'm after a UPS for some of our systems. It's going to have at least 1x 4-bay NAS connected and 1x backup HDD. The NAS is a QNAP TurboNAS TS-459 Pro+ and the HDD is an external mains-powered 3.5 HDD. Looking to connect both of them up to the UPS. I've done my UPS research and it's either: - APC Smart-UPS SMT750IC - UPS - 500 Watt - 750 VA - with APC SmartConnect (SMT750IC) - APC Smart-UPS SMT1000IC 700 Watt / 1000 VA with APC SmartConnect (SMT1000IC) - APC Smart-UPS SMT1500IC 1000 Watt / 1500 VA with APC SmartConnect (SMT1500IC) As always cost is an issue, but I seem to be getting conflicting info from the APC UPS load calculator to boot. It needs to be able to safely shutdown the NAS in the event of a power failure, that's the main concern. I don't want to skimp on UPS time but don't want overkill on something that's only got a NAS connected to it. If there's enough capacity on the UPS, we might connect one of the other identical NAS and HDD equipment to it in the future so it does them both. Is it just worth going for one of the higher capacity units and have done with it? Or would then 500 watt unit (SMT750IC) do the job? Would anyone more experienced than me in these systems mind letting me know what they think? Thanks

Looking at this review it only uses around 40watts with 4 drives being used + the external HDD so say 50w at max. So I would say a 500w one would do the job fine as that should give you around 40-50 minutes runtime. 1

However APC UPS selector (https://www.apc.com/shop/uk/en/tools/ups_selector/) then turns around and tells me it's 250W. It's like who's giving me the true info? lol

I’ve used that thing for full blown servers before and it usually says that they draw the region of 700w, despite them never coming close to that in reality. The servers generally have 700w PSUs in them though 1
southhamster Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 We are actually just looking to uprate our APC SMT750 which quite easily supports our Dell R420 server (low power CPU,4 disks,2PSU) and QNAP TS-459 NAS (intelCPU,4disks). Average load is generally around 105 watts for server and 35 watts NAS with runtime est at 44 mins from the APC powerchute s/w, so I would say the 750 model would be fine. One point is cost of replacement batteries (3-4 years) as the bigger models can be quite pricey. Although our SMT750 is fine at 6 years old, we are looking to add NTE, router and 2 POE switches to it so that in future our VOIP phone system will keep going for a while so are looking at SMC1000/1500. 1
jthompson Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 I have a BX700UI at home running a 2-bay QNAP plus the router/wifi. It doesn't have a network connection but the USB can be connected straight to the NAS and the QNAP software will recognise it and allow you to configure the shutdown timings from there. Should be fine for a single NAS, but not sure how you'd configure more than one for graceful shutdowns.

Yep the batteries on one unit were nearly as much as a new UPS when I was doing some research on it. Unfortunately the items I'd like to purchase to "future-proof" as much as possible are simply too expensive. The use case may change over the next few years as well, which would render the unit needing to be uprated. So at this point in time this is the only real option it seems. Usb and networked. Would never look at any other brands after having this.. Great cost as well.

I just bought one of these and it works well. Run time of about 35 mins. Plug it in, register online, jobs a goodun. All the config is done via cloud. SmartConnect does not support configuring local networking options. Connected it has QNAP 4 bay NAS, rack KVM switch, monitor, Ruckus Zonedirector, 6 switches, 2 x media converters.
