Accessing SIMS from outside the school

Hi

I have some senior staffs who have iPad’s and they would like access SIMS from outside to our network and our sims server is located within our network.

Firstly, I would like to have a VPN connection between their iPad and Windows 2019 server.

Once they have a VPN connection between the iPad and Windows 2019 server. I would like them to RDP into their PCs using Microsoft Remote Desktop App (App store) and access SIMS.

Will this setup work to access SIMS? I am happy to purchase necessary software and let me know if there is a better way of achieving this.

Using SIMS on an iPad, or anything without a keyboard and mouse is going to be a thoroughly miserable experience. I wouldn't recommend it, regardless of the technology stack you use to do it.

 

That said, if you have to do it I'd recommend using the Remote Desktop Web Client (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/clients/remote-desktop-web-client-admin) as it removes the need for an RDP app.

Have you looked at the SIMS Teacher APP? It provides a lot of SIMS functionality without the pain.

No, the tool synchronises up with Capita's infrastructure to allow access to your data via the app. "SIMS Services Manager" is the part on your server that provides access IIRC.

You can do this without needing the VPN or needing to use the client PCs on site if you have an RDS server set up. The MS Remote Desktop app on iOS/Android can connect straight to RDS webfeed URL and present any published apps for your users.
