Free Monitoring Software

Hello,

 

I was wondering if anyone can recommend some monitoring free software please? I would like to monitor servers as well as networking equipment such as switches, routers etc.

 

I have used Zabbix in the past however it was quite complex. I was hoping something that is easier to use.

I'm working on a project to do the same. After some consideration I have settled on Prometheus with a Grafana frontend.

Depends on how much you want to monitor. We use the free version of PRTG and it is great, 100 sensors. A sensor is anything you are measuring, so if you wanted every port on every switch you'd run into trouble, we just use ping to check switches are up and monitor the WAN connection. We also monitor VMWare environment, key servers, SIP trunk, website, SAN and appliances such as Smoothwall and Ruckus boxes. The maps are great and we have them showing up on our signage so if something breaks we have a visual and audible sound. Variety of graphs, ring graphs and traffic lights are available.

 

Runs on Windows so just need a spare VM or room on a current one.

 

Can't recommend enough, and if it came to it I would pay. Keeps us ahead of the game and looks very impressive to visitors.

LibreNMS is pretty simple to configure and use. It's a fork of Observium.

Zabbix and Grafana here get's my vote.

Using Check_MK here. The raw edition is free. Bit of a learning curve (it's based on Nagios) but very scalable. Once you've got some stuff set up, adding more of the same type of device then becomes pretty trivial. It's also bullet-proof.

 

As well as monitoring and graphing the usual stuff like disks, CPU usage, uptime, etc. you can monitor things like a particular Windows service, DHCP capacity, email delivery, content of a web page, etc.

we use Mutiny here... https://www.mutiny.com/product/academic/ and its £1 per device for academic use... its free for the first 10 devices, so worth a download to see if it works... can run on a VM or physical...! It paid for itself when it spotted a failing drive on one of our user data servers...

That looks like something I want to do, looks good as well when someone is visiting the office . I already use admin centre I install and test the other software.

Its nagios but all the setup has already been done. We have it running on a raspberry pi

We use LibreNMS, the only downside is it's basically all about SNMP, and Windows' SNMP support is pretty woeful these days. But apart from that it's great, I've even had some patches accepted.
