Apologies for the DM link, but it does make interesting reading - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7370641/Put-kettle-ads-telly.html

I have to admit that between Amazon Prime, Netflix, YouTube and catch up TV I very rarely watch over the air telly now. In fact I was amused to find that when decorating my living room last week that my TV aerial hadn't been plugged in for many, many months when I came to move it.

Almost all of my TV watching is through Prime or Netflix. I don't actively watch anything live on TV anymore. I don't pay for a licence as I don't watch catch up services either.

If it isn't on Netflix, Amazon Prime or YouTube, I simply don't watch it.

That said, I remember when I was in Boston last year, watching what would be a half hour show in the UK (with ads) became a 1 hour show in the US which I thought was mental.

"People are moving away from traditional broadcast TV in part because there are no interstitial ads on streaming services, what should we do?"

...

"Put in more ads?"

I get why they're doing it, trying to raise more money using the people who do watch, but it's also going to push more people away from terrestrial TV, isn't it?

The adverts in Australia are ridiculous. I haven't watched TV since I arrived.

Putting on more adverts is just going to encourage piracy.

If you like talent shows, reality shows or game shows, you're quite well served by the terrestrial broadcasters. They're presumably nice and cheap to produce week after week and they're only really competing with one another, not the big streaming platforms.

From watching a few things on All 4, it seems like the number of adverts you see on there is far lower than on a live broadcast. A lot of 'ad breaks' on catch-up contain no ads at all, and continue straight to the next part uninterrupted. Adverts before a program starts on catch-up are frustrating to have to sit through, but I'd be fine with a few more being shown during. I'm sure they could get more adverts in on catch-up.

The adverts that I wish I really didn't have to sit through are the ones before a films starts in the cinema. Like I haven't paid the full ticket price to see the film?!

I have Sky and record most of what I watch and then I can just fast forward and watch at my leisure. I must admit I don't watch much but have a few series on the go.

Around 2008 one of the US networks did an experiment running their prim-time slots with reduced advertising. Pushing the length of a "hour long program" to up form 45 to 50 minutes. (This is why the first season of Fringe had 50 min episodes)

They scrapped it after 1 year because they had problems getting the content providers to make shows with that additional 5 minutes. (I guess because it made it harder to sell to other networks, or reuse in other time-slots)

The up-shot of that is that really everything needs to move in the same direction at (mostly) the same time otherwise you're going to have problems. And TBH the 45 min "american" or w/ads drama seems pretty ubiquitous these days so I think you'd struggle to change it either way.
