Dell Server SSDs

I'm after some SSDs for my Dell servers. I've been quoted the below;

 

Dell 2.5” 960GB 12G SAS Read Intensive SSD £420.00

Dell 2.5” 1.92TB 12G SAS Read Intensive SSD £630.00

 

Sound reasonable? If not, what would you expect and where from? I've never bought server grade SSDs before.

It depends on how you look at it. They are likely to be rebadged versions of these and these respectively or if not, something pretty similar. As you can see, neither of those cost as much money as you've been quoted. If you can re-use the server's existing caddies or buy separate caddies, they will probably work in your servers but there is no guarantee.

 

However, the versions you buy from Dell will have:

 

1) Dell Firmware

2) Dell Caddies

3) Dell warranty and certification

4) Certainty that they will work in your servers and recourse if they don't.

 

which may justify the increased cost for you.

 

FWIW I've stuck Intel and Kingston SATA SSDs into Dell PowerEdge R630s before and they worked perfectly well for what we wanted from them.

I mean it kind of depends on what the purpose is etc

 

Dell drives are always priced above normal range, but then you can claim on warranties etc with them normally (and "fully supported" if you want all the monitoring reporting etc)

 

You can use other drives like Intel data centre etc (generally require firmware updates on older servers), and there are some people even on here who use non-enterprise SSDs under the assumption the price difference, but depends if this is critical servers etc?

I've never batted an eyelid at throwing the Samsung drives in our servers - they're either full of PM863s or SM863s and both a lot less money than the above. The moment something is firmware locked or held back by firmware because of is the moment we no longer use that hardware and they get thrown into the same Pit of Disgust as Apple.
