Broadcast a desktop to other PCs

Hi there,

 

I would like to know how people would approach this problem..

 

We intend to set up a large room with a main display at the front and what ever is displayed on the large projected image is broadcast simultaniously on upto 6 other displays at the same time...

 

Do you just split the signal and push it to the other displays?

Do you attach a pc to each of the other displays and push the image around the network? (it would be handy to use these displays for smaller group work anyway) if so.. How?

We use Netsupport School for IT bases, which is pretty good and can do what you're after (and a fair bit more). It may be more than you want to pay though.

This will do what you need. The users on the 6 screens can even display their desktop too if you allow them. Great for interactive type lessons

I assume you mean the 6 other displays are going to be scattered around the school. If that's so, probably VGA-over-cat5 would suit you best. VGA signals can be sent over standard cat5 cable as used for your network (not: not actually over your network, that would be VGA-over-ethernet or VGA-over-IP, which is getting more complicated, this just uses the same cable). Google/search these forums for "baluns", that's the device you want.

I did this the cheapo way - put a VNC server on the front machine, installed as an application rather than a service IIRC.

 

On workstations at the back of the room I installed a listening VNC client, launching at startup.

 

The front machine has a couple of batch files, one to start the VNC server and add each of the clients, one to kill the VNC server.
