Need some help with bike license..?

Hello All

 

Looking at getting a little 50cc scooter like the Peugeot Speed fight but I've got some questions about if I can drive it legally?

 

When I was 16 I passed my CBT on a provisional license which then at 17 I passed my Full UK Driving license for a car. I have the category 'AM' on the back of my licence but with code 122 which apparently means I need to complete a CBT.

 

So my question is if I've already completed my CBT do I need to retake one or does it last forever if you have a Full UK Driving license? Also with a 50cc am I able to drive with a pillion and without L plates?

 

I've had my license for 7 years so passed in 2012 if that helps! I've looked all over the Internet but some sites tell me one thing and then others tell me something else!

still need to do a CBT for a bike the only exception is if you had your full licence before feb 1 2001

a cbt is only valid for 2 years

you cant ride pillion unless you have full bike licence!

Hey guys, thanks for your help! I contacted the DVLA and even she wasn't sure! She told me she couldn't give me a definitive answer... SERIOUSLY!? I found this page on the gov website which states if I have passed my full UK car license after 1st Feb 2001 and completed a CBT this should let me ride without L plates or and a pillion passenger!?

I'm so confused no one can say yes or no I presume its because people are too scared of getting it wrong in case it ends them in hot water!

You have your own answer there. If you passed your car test within two years of passing your CBT you can ride a 50cc moped.

I know but dosen't tell me the specifics is the issue! 😔 Like can I drive with a pillion, do I need L plates, do I need to keep completing my CBT course every two years for a 50cc or can I just do it once.. It says that it lasts the full length of my driving license but that could mean *as long as you keep redoing your CTB.

If it was me I’d probably phone my nearest bike/cbt training center and ask them. When I did both my mod 1 and mod 2 my trainers were also police bikers and very knowledgable.

Must admin the DVLA isn't particularly clear at things as I have just applied for my HGV provisional and that was a pain knowing exactly what I needed to do.

You MUST pass your CBT, you MUST renew it after two years if you do not pass your bike test, you MUST display L Plates, you MUST NOT exceed 125cc output and you MUST NOT carry a pillion passenger.

It's right there, do you you need someone to spell it out?

As for pillions, a 50cc moped won't have the power to carry people so I wouldn't even bother.

Yes my mistake, I was getting it confused with the full-sized motorcycle licence that I was aiming for a few years ago.

The bike rules are the most confusing unnecessary pile of nannying the British state have managed to come up with so far imho.

Why on earth they don't just stick 16 year olds on 125's is beyond me, mopeds are only safe in towns, outside them on A-roads they are dangerously slow.

 

It gets even more confusing when you move up to A2 or full A categories.

 

For example, it's possible for a 17 year old to pass their A1 (125) bike test and at 19 then have A2 provisional.

However, can you then ride the A2 on L-plates or only if escorted with an approved trainer? (This is controversial because in this situation the rider already has a full A1 license and previous CBT)

 

Then there's also confusion surrounding what constitutes an A2 or full A bike and the Gov are unclear about that too. I know the Aprilia Pegaso 650 at 50hp and 200kg is inside the power to weight ratio for A2 going by the numbers but the list they have shows full A, funny thing is they don't cover the full range of bike models over the years.

And that's your answer. The only thing that's not included in that answer is the info about a pillion. However a quick search tells me that a full licence allows you to carry a pillion - although on a 50cc moped, it sounds a bit optimistic to me.

I'd reccomend a CBT anyway, a 50cc machine will probably leave you wanting.

 

Also I'd reccomend further traning to any rider, in your case bike safe due to the low cost, with a 125 it will be capable on nationals ( assuming that your nearest workshop covers nationals )
