New face of the Bank of England's £50 note is revealed

Computer pioneer and codebreaker Alan Turing will feature on the new design of the Bank of England's £50 note.

 

He is celebrated for his code-cracking work that proved vital to the Allies in World War Two.

 

The £50 note will be the last of the Bank of England collection to switch from paper to polymer when it enters circulation by the end of 2021.

 

The note was once described as the "currency of corrupt elites" and is the least used in daily transactions.

 

However, there are still 344 million £50 notes in circulation, with a combined value of £17.2bn, according to the Bank of England's banknote circulation figures.

 

"Alan Turing was an outstanding mathematician whose work has had an enormous impact on how we live today," said Bank of England governor Mark Carney.

 

"As the father of computer science and artificial intelligence, as well as war hero, Alan Turing's contributions were far ranging and path breaking. Turing is a giant on whose shoulders so many now stand."

Poor sod shortened the war by several years, practically invented computer science, and his home nation criminalised him for being gay. Utterly horrific what happened to him.

 

Glad he's getting the recognition he deserves if rather late! I'll make sure to get one of these just to keep for posterity.

I just got a nice little shiver when working out whether the binary on the ribbon of the new £50 banknote meant anything.

 

1010111111110010110011000 is 23061912 in decimal. Alan Turing was born on the 23rd June 1912. What a nice touch.

 

RIP, Alan.

I dont think I have ever had a £50 note. Mind you in the past year I havent used cash at all.

 

 

I just hope in years to come that other note worthy figures are put on bank notes rather than the current 'celebs' of our time.

Having grown up working in my dad's newsagents, I handled many in my teenage years! I also used to go to the bank to get holiday cash out in £50 notes, just to make it easier to carry! Back in the day, you'd get a better exchange rate for converting 50s! lol!

We are going to issue the new £50 note on 23.06.21, which is Alan Turing’s birthday. Curiously, the date adds up to 50. Lucky coincidence or master plan?
