Student Mice & Keyboards

A question that I am quite surprised hasn't been asked already, but what do you do to battle student mice & keyboard damage?

 

A number of things we have tried include;

• Cable Tie-ing the cables at the back
  
• Asking the teachers to remove the mice and keyboards at the end of a lesson
  
• Dummy CCTV Cameras (Replaced by actual CCTV cameras
  
• "IT Learning Walks" - we would walk round rooms and check behavior etc
  
• Sign in/out sheets where a teacher signs to say the room was in OK condition at the start & end of the lesson
  

 

Any suggestions on what other schools do would be highly appreciated

Weigh up the cost of damage to the cost of management of it - keyboard and mouse sets aren't particularly expensive. That said, CCTV has been our biggest benefit and make sure it's used. When an issue is reported, we ensure it's followed up and damage is billed to the students appropriately. Word gets around quick.

It should all be about class control otherwise!

We have CCTV in ICT suites, and we buy decent quality keyboards and mice now. They seem to last a lot longer. Beyond that? We don't really get much hassle with them.

Don't let them in unsupervised.

 

If there is a teacher in the room then, it's up to the teacher to control that lesson and the students, if the CCTV works now use it. Find out who it was and disable their AD account, no kid wants to write on paper anymore they will soon learn.

sound like a nice place to work this replacing mouse and keyboard why don't they have a setting plan for student and put them on them on that computer easy way of doing this

I've always been tempted by the idea of a 1:1 scheme, but just for keyboards and mice. Students must carry their own around and plug them in to use a desktop computer.
