Wireless Extender to outbuilding (Virgin/SH)

Evening All,

 

Trying to think of a neater way to do this, but struggling. Basically, trying to get the wifi signal extended into an outbuilding for a relative, however the easy option of powerlines are out because the wiring within the outbuilding is seriously old (Think fusewire old!). Running an armoured/external cable isn't really an option as they have an old concrete drive between the buildings and it isn't close enough for a simple throw over. (Not in the mood for digging that up! )

 

Inside they have the Virgin Superhub, and don't really want to replace this fully (Else would just throw in 2/3 UniFi meshed and turn the SH into modem only).

 

Can you use a single UniFi as a downlink to a Superhub or is it only to other UniFis? Or is it really one of those times you think a "standard" extender is the way to go? Not really fussed about the 5GHz aspect, so happy with a 2.4GHz etc if you have any ideas.

You could use a unifi or Mikrotik point to point link. Or depending on distance a good unifi nearest to the out building. Can you cable it back to the super hub.

 

That said I run a Mikrotik as a router and a SH as a modem and it’s flawless. (And a unifi AP)

How about either

 

1) an Ethernet cable run to it?

2) Fibre optic cable run to it?

3) Ethernet to fibre conversion e.g. Ethernet > Fibre media converter > Ethernet. You could get it to nearly 170-200m or more then, combining the tech. Not particularly neat, but gets the job done.

Sadfully all the fibre/cable options are pretty much ruled out by the concrete drive as mentioned, but I forgot about point to point links! Gonna have to have a check over the weekend and see if that'll work

What sort of distance are you talking here? And what're the walls of the building you need connectivity in made of?

Building to house is only about 15-20m (It's just double layer brick build on the outbuilding), but in terms of the current router it's on the other side of the house so through 3/4 internal walls as well as the distance. You just about get a decent enough signal on the side of the house nearest the outbuilding in terms of any meshing etc.

Personally, I would do ethernet over power to the inside of that wall nearest the outbuilding, then use an Ubiquiti NanoBeam to do the link between the buildings. They are super cheap. Depending on what you then want the other end, any cheap wireless AP would do the job. The M5 16dBi models are about £55 each (with your needing 2). You can get a simple AP to cover the internal area of the outbuilding for £30 - something like a TP-Link WA910ND.

We used to use this sort of setup for a portable classroom that was about the same distance away. (Though we used a Ruckus AP inside the building)
