tech_guy Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I have an Asus EEE. Great for occasional use. Using the small keyboard and screen for long periods can be tiring. I put a trimmed down version of XP on it using nLite. Great for RDP work. Great for checking email in Starbucks!

Battery life is quite good but depends what you are doing. I got about 2 and a half hours watching films with it. (the 4G model, as I believe the 2G and surf are different batteries)

Joanne Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I put ubuntu on mine but only had it on for a day... i got sick of writing hundreds of lines of code in to get it to work. I'm sure there is a better way though. Personally I wouldn't use one to remote desktop... the screen is too small and it is rather awkward. I have used logmein on mine and it wasn't that great. Either wait for the 9" screen to come out or buy one of those small advent laptops with a 12" screen, I've been told they are very good.

Comes with vista so its crap but as soon as XP's on it no problems. Core2Duo processor and 2Gig RAM. She paid £450. I then brought a Phillips Freevents 12NB(something) Again 12" but a little better spec (webcam, Better processor, Better DVD writer etc) and paid £495 Both machines are really small and very fast. (with XP)

I agree with the comments posted here, using the it for prolonged amount of time can be a pain. And the fact that it has decent battery life. You could try one of the many available alternatives to the miniBook one that I am looking forward to is the HP 2133. Details here
Guest kerrymoralee9280 Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 It comes with Xandros - there are plenty of guides out there about how to unlock the easy mode and turn it into a normal machine running a decent copy of linux with Open Office and RDP etc - only takes a few seconds to do.

tech_guy Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 how trimmed? also whats the mouse on these? battery life? Check out: EeeUser ASUS Eee PC Forum / nLite slim down XP, step by step I use the touchpad and it's okay. The battery lasts about 2 hours with frequent on off usage for me.

Works ok for surfing the internet... we put a gig of RAM in ours though. I wou;dn't try using it for any heavy applications like office though. OO takes a while to load on the default... can't imagine what the MS one is like!

_Bob_ Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I've got eeexubuntu on mine and with a little tweaking I have enabled compiz for desktop prettiness. It puts vista to shame, especially when you consider performance for the spec. Got to admit though when I'm using GIMP I go back to my desktop unit, the eee isn't really designed for this. The eeeuser.com forums and wiki are a great source of info.

Its great for surfing the net (especially in front of the TV), and its real nice to be able to sit in the pub using thier free wifi to email while enjoying a cold one I haven't used it much at work TBH (I bought it for me personally anyway) as I can't really see much application for it. OK, so the Small+Light factor means its easy to take with you anywhere in school, and you can remote in using it if you need to (contrary to what others have said, I find that its very good for remoting in; the built-in remoting software works with a variety of VNC-type remote programs, the screen adjusts to the correct size etc. which is more than can be said for my PDA ) Me and the Techie had a few good games of Frozen Bubble over the wireless here, that was a laugh Its nice to take to meetings to make notes etc. and being able to connect to a projector to make quick presentation I image will be useful at some point too. Unlocking it into "advanced mode" is good IMO (doing this gives you a more regular-looking desktop environment as opposed to the "so simple a kid can use it" menu system, which although good, I personally didn't like much); its just a shame that a further bit of coding is needed after doing this in order to get it remember your desktop icons, otherwise they are lost when you turn off. Still, even for a n00b to Linux-type coding it was pretty straightforward (apart from the school filters not letting me access Updates! ) Other bits; The webcam is not bad quality The wireless can be a bit buggy (doesnt like spaces in SSID's and wont accept a WAP key ) The voice command doesn't work properly, and isn't worth the disk space it takes up No optical drive, but can do everything via external or network to another PC's drive so no biggie really Go for the SD card or USB stick for more memory, upgrading the 4Gig flash inside will be a nightmare (not to mention wrecking your warranty!) Overall I like it, its not the most versatile or powerful bit of kit, but for Internert access, simple word processing and speadheeting, it beats lugging around a heavy laptop, looks nice, and for any non-techie people, has the additional "wow" factor that we all love to see in their eyes (c'mon, you know we all do)
button_ripple Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 The wireless is fine with WPA and spaces if you use the "create" option within the "Networks" option, the wireless option will not show them. The built in viewer for VNC i think is fantastic as you can quickly reset someone's password if they forget it in the staffroom
