Remote Desktop Server Spec

Looks to install a new physical Remote Desktop server running Server 2019 - not keen on running as a VM due to resources and in case I need to reboot any part of the Hyper-V cluster remotely.

 

What sort of server spec would people go for.

i guess it depends on what you use it for!! - ours are mostly used for remote access ie from home.. not for classroooms of thin clients.

they are getting a bit old now but are fine for the remote access there normaly isnt more than a handfull on at once and we have two in the farm..

 

But i would go with Lots of ram - and as many cores as you can afford - use SSDs maybe even stripe the SSDs.. if you can have 2 in the farm it helps with patching etc...

Usage is just everyday Office stuff with the off bit of internet stuff.

 

Staff mainly use it from home or if they have their BYOD devices in school.

 

The last time I looked we had approx 30 staff using it!

 

Yep, was thinking SSD.

 

I seem to remember someone a link to a site where you you could buy 1 server and get a 2nd free but for the life of me I cannot remember the site!

i have two phisical hosts... and a virtulized Gateway + licensing + Brooker... it seems to work fine...

We have a max indicated usage of about 15 at a time. We currently use a single virtual machine as session host, with 8 cores and 16gb ram plus a second gateway/broker with 2 cores and 4gb ram. I've had no complaints about performance.

 

As we're about to absorb another school into our network, I'm going to be either adding a second session host to the farm or I'm going to repurpose their domain server to combine all roles - that has 2x 12 cores ,32gb ram and 8TB of 10k sas. Depends if I get all the data off over the summer or if I have to redirect some of it until the following half term.
