Andycat Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Hi, we're replacing 10 older NEC UST projectors. We're being quoted some BenQ DLP, and some Hitachi "normal" ones too, among others. What are the benefit of the DLP? The Tech specs say the lamp life is a little shorter, and the lamps are more expensive, but I don't know the overall benefits in real life of a DLP?? BTW, all 10 department/teachers want a replacement projector rather than any sort of TV/screen. They have to be UST. 1
synaesthesia Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 TCO of any screen compared to a UST DLP projector is FAR lower and the initial purchase price is typically only around twice the amount. I'd have to question those teachers as to their preference. There are nearly no benefits over a flat screen...

Our current have lasted 7 years, and we're only replacing 10 out of 80 so far. Anyway, DLP vs not DLP please! We have some screens, it's not like they don't get to use them. They want to teach with projectors in these venues.
BennyG Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 I would check out Epson LCD UST projectors, reliable and the lamps really aren't that expensive (£60 approx) when out of warranty. Personally I would avoid DLP, we had a few DLP projectors and they all needed to replaced at some point within the warranty period - mainly failing chips. As a side note we have a few panels but our staff seem to prefer to have a larger screen/projection area and IWB combo. The cost of a 80" inch panel compared to a new UST with decent warranty is still too high.
synaesthesia Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Fair enough. For what it's worth, I'll agree with @BennyG above, we've been rocking Epsons for years, a mixture of UST and standard and have found reliability & cost of lamps good.
Colt_phil Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 I would also check out the Epson UST, LCD projectors. LCD seems to give a better representation of colours, somethings reds can look brown etc with DLP. My old school was prone to DLP chip faults causing white spots, I’d avoid DLP personally.
chazzy2501 Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 DLP has some nice advantages its generally brighter as it doesn't filter away so much light producing the colours, the screen door effect is much lower (the gaps between the pixels) so the image has less blocked light (again). Also they generally don't have filters, so no termly filter duty! but dead pixels, funny colours, rainbow effect, green fizz (early dlp) They are much better now than they were.
BenQ_Royce Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 if you're going to be using daily, then lack of image decay from DLP is going to be a strong advantage. though with any projector making sure you get a good warranty cover is important. BenQ's education series come with a 5 year onsite.

SamanthaD Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Another argument after you've resolved the DLP / non DLP - why are you looking at 4:3 projectors? The BenQ MX842UST is an XGA projector (1024x768) - I don't mean to sound up myself but who actually uses that resolution anymore?

BenQ_Royce Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 i would guess if using a 4:3 IWB then there's not much choice to go to widescreen, the MX842UST is pitched as a replacement model, where the board works, but projector has failed. Yes this one specific model does have a 3yr engineer onsite warranty.
