We need to vote with our feet. They might be saving money but the cost in time and support to schools probably cancels the savings out many times, only they don't have to carry the cost and inconvenience. It's a huge backward step messing about with pac files and certificates. It will be embarrassing if I have to change every BYOD and guest machine that needs connecting. I'm going to try the captive portal when we go live but even that seems to have performance issues. Well done BTLS.

I'm not putting the school through an ISP changeover after this... no thank you!

Most of the problems have been me not applying the settings correctly. Another problem is the machines not receiving the settings because laptops. Hopefully everything will calm down next week.

My domain computers have been ok, but it really feels like a step backwards. We are just going to have to tell vistors they cannot use their own computers in school until we figure out a guest network.

Our Evac app isn't working. I've installed the certificate on the Inventry machine, but something else must be wrong. The ipad with the app also has the certificate and internet access... but it cannot connect to Inventry.

Perhaps the website is being blocked? Might help if I checked Netsweeper... and knew where to check.... and knew how to unblock URLs :D

Discovered the "Request Log Files" which shows live data of traffic, thanks to my friend from BTLS.

They have a list of apps which they will be sorting out to work through Netsweeper. This includes Target Tracker and Inventry amongst a few others.

Apologies - Long post....

I setup Netsweeper in my non-domain school - all works as expected

At the school my wife works at - technican is off at moment and its not working 100%

Its a server2016 domain - all GPOs/AD stuff seems to be fine - pupils logging on are getting allocated the default primary-students policy and staff logging on are getting staff policy - the non-domain un-managed IPads are also being allocated default primary students policy

Normal filtering is working fine - pupils can't get on Facebook/twitter but staff can

BUT if I add any deny or allows to the policies - they are ignored by domain computers but ipads obey them - e.g machines using WAgent seem to ignore the extra rules but the non-managed ipads are fine

On domain computers - if I select the WAgent icon - it shows being allocated to nsw-pupils or nsw-staff as appropriate

Reading thru the BTLS setup instructions, it implies that there should be correspondingly named netsweeper group nsw-pupils and nsw-staff but all I had were the default Students and Staff.

When I tried to create a nsw-pupils - it said already exists

Eventually, I decided to get creative and create a specific nsw-swpupils test group - changed AD for the 2014 user (one user/year group) and if I logon as that 2014 user - WAgent is allocating it to nsw-swpupils and everything works fine - denies and allows now working

Is this just something wrong in the setup here or are other primary schools having same issue?

I'm just including some screenshots

What I've done is go into URL Tools > URL List Manager. In there I have created a lists called Student Allowed / Student Blocked. Click create list then check the box for either a Deny or Allow list,

Then you add the URLs into that list to allow or block.

Hope that helps. Give me a shout if you need more deets.

Wondering if anyone else has seen this?

Having migrated a couple of schools now to Netsweeper, we are seeing consistently slower speeds then before migration.

In some cases, half speeds and even down to 2.1Mbps.

Can people try some speed tests and see if its less then before?

Unfortunately (or otherwise) I was around when they tried Netsweeper 5 or 6 years ago and one of the main issues then was speed!!

Thanks in advance

Just after some advise...I've copied all our blocked student URL's and now want to import them into netsweeper.

Policy Manager > secondary-students@ > URL/keyword local list > Import >

I point that to my test txt file but under 'Entry Type' it wont let me select 'URL' it keeps defaulting to 'keyword'

Hope that makes sense. Also whats the best way to assign an IP range (our guest wifi) to a filtering group such as nsw-staff without the need to install certs ect.

Hi Paul,

Are you running a transparent of explicit proxy?

Hmmm.... we're supposed to be on 100MB. Maybe I should test first thing in the morning, or after school....

Do you know if this is much different from what you were getting pre-Netsweeper? Do you have any speedtests from then?

I don't think it was ever that low... think it used to hover in the 70s. I'll do some tests after school and see if there is much difference.

Sorry for the late response it's transparent

Thanks Paul,

We're running a transparent proxy and see same issues with latency. I have been working with Netsweeper to hopefully resolve these issues.

Not sure if you mentioned previously but do you host this yourself or is it hosted by Netsweeper?

Ours currently worked by using IIS to authenticate the user but we are in the process of tested a different setup, whereas we use the wagent instead of using iis

Few issues I'm encountering:

- Staff will have no access to anything. The agent appears to have timed out. Logging off and on again resolves.

- iPads not getting any access. When logging onto the filter, it appears that the iPad has taken an IP that used to belong to a PC (we have 8hr lease on dhcp) and it sets it to block all. Deleting the client off netsweeper resolves this.

- Visitors having to install the certificate. Can't see a way around this.... RIP.

I'm being migrated on Tuesday. SLT not yet looked at filtering categories. Going to be a close one!

Anything I should know before it starts? How prepared shall I be? Will it be a long afternoon?

As long it is the last week of term so if things were to go badly I'm sure they won't be too unhappy. They have said we can always revert to lightspeed in 10 mins.
