Pork Pies and other Pies

Just been down to the high street because my wife wanted a pork pie from the local butcher for her lunch

 

Luckily I got there just in time to get the last Pork Pie - which left a problem as to what I was going to have

 

So I got a meat pie for me

 

As I was paying I noticed that the Pork Pie was labelled as "32%Pork" - whereas the Meat pie was labelled as "10% Beef"

 

Which make me wonder - if the pork pie has 32% Pork and the meat one has 10% beef - what is the missing 22% of meat from - and would I have recognised the animal (presumably) before it was killed

 

and was it originally called Fido or Rover??

I used to manage a pub where we'd get the frozen food supplier leaflets delivered.

 

There was a page of Burgers that always made me laugh, as the top of the pages started with "100% Beef, MRM Free" (MRM being Mechanically Reclaimed Meat) - as they got cheaper the "MRM Free" disappeared.

 

Then the percentages went down and down and down and down...

 

 

The last option was "Meat Burgers"

At a previous school we always got served lasagna for lunch on INSET days, without fail. I asked what the meat version was made with once out of curiosity, and got the response "dunno it's just what we got in". As such we forever called it the mystery meat meal.

 

Still better than the muffins that tasted vaguely meaty....

There are actually laws about what bits of animals you are and aren't allowed to use. I don't know about eyelids especially but I'm fairly certain eyeballs aren't allowed. And speaking of, reproductive organs and digestive tracts are also a no-go.

 

A large percentage of food will simply just be water and other bulkers. Let's not forget that the inside of a pork pie is solid, the inside of your typical meat pie isn't. And the percentages are reported as an overall whole. So that also includes the pastry etc.

True - I highly doubt there are actual scrotums (scrota?) in meat, although after seeing a BBC documentary where they tried to make the absolute cheapest meat pies they could with MRM and other pink slime-like things, I'm rather skeptical of cheap-o meat. Can't remember what it was called, but they made "Mister Riley's Pies". EDIT: Was called "Britain's Really Disgusting Foods".

But they couldn't legally declare them to be 'The UK's worst pie!' because one pub/restaurant chain wouldn't release their ingredients list
